The Mare family’s carriage raced as if flying toward Palazzo Carlo. Alfonso’s mere appearance allowed them to pass unchallenged through the palace checkpoint.

“To the prince’s residence!”

Layer upon layer of iron gates swung open as if by magic. Ariadne, well aware of the palace guards’ usual strictness, clicked her tongue in astonishment.

Upon reaching his quarters, Alfonso leapt from the carriage and immediately sought out the knight on duty.

“Who’s assigned to guard duty today?”

The unfortunate man who’d missed the ball and drawn this shift was Sir Desilio, aide to Sir Bernardino. At least he’d been allowed to remain seated in his office. Sir Desilio promptly offered the name of the one man he knew who was even more unfortunate than himself.

“It’s Sir Manfredi, Your Highness.”

But the prince seemed in no mood for banter. Alfonso issued a curt order.

“Summon him at once.”

Sir Desilio gave a firm nod and rushed out of the office.

However, unlike his earlier swiftness, he failed to return for a long while. Alfonso, now seated in his office, wore a deeply displeased expression—there was no place for Ariadne to sit comfortably except the formal reception sofa.

Alfonso kept glancing toward Ariadne, gauging her mood; she, meanwhile, was frantic to secure Sir Elco’s custody.

This awkward scene—where the man watched her every cue while the woman paid no heed to his feelings—lasted for about twenty minutes before Sir Desilio finally returned. But he was alone. Alfonso immediately asked,

“Where is Manfredi?”
