Shall I Save You, Duke? (Completed Main Story) - Chapter 4
“What? What did you just say…?”
Lina stood silently, as if she hadn’t heard the duke’s words clearly, prompting him to ask again.
“I asked if we’ve met before.”
‘Is he referring to our meeting in the forest…?’
Lina carefully studied his face—and then realized.
This man wasn’t asking about their encounter in the forest.
Only then did Lina’s face turn pale as she grasped the situation.
‘Surely… he couldn’t possibly remember that day… No, that’s impossible.’
Lina’s hands, folded over her stomach, grew damp with sweat.
‘Stay calm. Even if the magic didn’t work properly, there’s no way the duke would think the me from back then and the me now are the same person.’
Lina quietly reassured herself and replied in a steady voice.
“Are you referring to when I saw you in the forest a few days ago?”
The duke, watching Lina—who spoke calmly about their past meeting in the forest—with indifferent eyes, let out a low sigh.
“No. I must’ve said something foolish. You may go now.”
“Yes, Your Grace.”
‘Thank goodness. He’s letting it go…’
Relieved inwardly, Lina accidentally locked eyes with Cullen, who stood beside her.
Seeing his stern expression—clearly determined to scold her—made her sigh once more, almost involuntarily.
‘…It seems this side won’t let it go so easily.’
The moment Lina stepped out of the study, Cullen gave her a thorough scolding and made her retake her maid etiquette lessons.
Eventually, only after the sun had fully set was Lina finally free from Cullen and able to return to her quarters.
Utterly exhausted in both body and mind, she shuffled wearily to her bed, collapsed onto it limply, and thought back to her encounter with the duke.
‘So… the memory wasn’t erased after all…?’
The duke’s question—asking if he’d seen her somewhere before—made Lina’s heart plummet as if dropping to the floor.
‘No, the magic couldn’t have failed. It’s never gone wrong before!’
Lina slowly shook her head, unable to accept what had happened earlier that day.
“It must’ve just been a coincidence.”
May, who’d been lying in the bed beside her and apparently heard Lina’s muttering, asked,
“What was?”
“Huh? Nothing. Is your leg feeling better now?”
“It’s still too soon to work, but it’s much improved! Might as well take some time off while I can. Oh! Speaking of which, Lina—did you see His Grace? How was he?”
Seeing May’s cheerful, oblivious smile as she asked about the duke, Lina replied dryly,
“He was the worst.”
“I really don’t want to go in…”
At the top of the stairs leading to the third floor, someone sighed so deeply it seemed the earth itself might cave in.
Lina was on her way to the duke’s bedroom, reluctantly fulfilling her duty as his personal maid.
But her feet refused to move forward, so she stood right outside his door, repeatedly bumping her head against the wall with dull thuds.
Her forehead had already turned red from how many times she’d knocked it.
“Just around this corner is his room…”
Yet Lina remained rooted in place, fidgeting endlessly with the duke’s clothes held tightly in both hands.
After a long while, she exhaled sharply, then lifted her chin resolutely and clenched her fists.
“Alright. One week. I’ll give it exactly one week!”
“What are you planning to do?”
Startled by the low voice suddenly coming from behind her, Lina whirled around.
The duke was climbing up from below, his white shirt loosely buttoned and his whole appearance disheveled—as if he’d just finished exercising.
“Y-Your Grace…!”
“So. What are you going to try?”
Whether he’d actually heard Lina’s words or not, the duke swiftly ascended the remaining steps with his long legs until he stood right before her.
Lina’s body stiffened instantly at the sudden closeness.
The duke stared at her blankly for a moment, then abruptly held out his hand.
Trending
‘…What? Why is he reaching out his hand…?’
Lina gaped at the outstretched hand, utterly bewildered, until the duke pointed at the clothes she was holding.
“The things you’re holding… they look like mine?”
“Oh, I’ll help you put them on once you’re inside…”
“No need.”
Flustered by the duke’s firm refusal, Lina rolled her eyes and asked,
“Then… shall I bring your meal right away?”
The duke merely nodded without answering, so Lina quickly hurried off toward the dining room.
“Phew… That startled me! Why does he always pop up out of nowhere like that?”
Though slightly embarrassed by his blunt rejection just moments ago, she was secretly delighted that he preferred dressing himself.
“I just need to serve his meal quickly and get out.”
Lina, who’d rushed down to the first floor to prepare breakfast, knocked on the door.
“Your Grace, your meal is ready.”
“Come in.”
Hearing the duke’s voice granting permission, Lina entered the room, pushing the breakfast trolley.
“Your Grace, shall we have breakfast at the— Huh!”
But she gasped before she could finish her sentence.
The duke, apparently having just bathed, stood dripping water onto the floor while vigorously drying his hair with a towel.
‘What…! If you’d just bathed, why not say so before calling me in…!!’
“Bring the meal here.”
Unaware—or perhaps indifferent—to Lina’s inner turmoil, the duke gave a slight nod.
“…Yes.”
Lina wheeled the tray over to the table the duke had indicated.
As she transferred the food onto the table, a cool, fresh scent suddenly wafted past her.
Feeling the duke approach from beside her, Lina’s hands began to tremble faintly.
‘At least put on proper clothes…’
Desperately avoiding looking at the duke’s body, Lina fixed her gaze solely on the tabletop.
But human vision is wider than one thinks.
Though her eyes were firmly on the table, her attention somehow kept drifting to the skin visible through his loosely tied bathrobe.
Swallowing hard, Lina moved behind his chair to attend to his meal.
“That’s enough. You may leave.”
“Pardon? But the meal service…”
“No need.”
“…Yes, understood. I’ll take my leave then.”
As soon as she finished speaking, Lina swiftly closed the door behind her, leaned against the wall, and finally exhaled the breath she’d been holding.
“Phew…”
The image of the half-naked man lingered in her mind like an afterimage.
Fanning her flushed cheeks, Lina murmured aloud as a sudden realization struck her.
“Now that I think about it, he changes his own clothes and eats alone too?”
She recalled Emma’s words: “He’s lived on battlefields for so long—he’ll be a low-maintenance master.”
“Maybe this… isn’t so bad after all…?”
“Lina. We need to replace the study curtains today, so please take down the old ones. It’ll be heavy—perhaps ask another girl to help you…”
“No, it’s fine! I can do it alone.”
“Are you sure? They’re quite heavy.”
“Yes, I’m fine.”
‘Even if it’s a bit tough, I’d rather do it alone.’
Working with other maids she didn’t get along with would only waste time.
“Then stop by the storeroom on your way and bring a ladder—it’ll be needed to take down the curtains. Once removed, wash them and store them properly back in the storeroom. Have someone else hang the new ones.”
“Yes, Emma.”
Carrying the ladder and new curtains from the storeroom, Lina’s steps toward the study felt much lighter than they had a few days prior.

‘Just days ago, walking this path filled me with such anxiety.’
It had already been a full week since Lina started working as the duke’s maid, yet none of the troubles she’d feared had come to pass.
Though his temperament seemed a bit sensitive and prickly, the duke was actually a considerate master to serve.
‘In fact, it’s surprisingly easy…’
The duke continued to treat Lina as if she were invisible, showing not the slightest interest in her.
Moreover, having lived on battlefields since childhood, he disliked having attendants fuss over him and handled everything himself—which left Lina with very little to do.
‘Back in the annex, cleaning that vast space every day left me utterly drained…’
Here, unlike the annex, Lina’s duties consisted only of simple tasks—occasional errands, meal deliveries, and bed-making—things even a child could manage.
The duke always looked weary-eyed, likely from poor sleep, and his temperament was somewhat sensitive, but that hardly posed any real problem.
‘If I’d known it’d be this easy, I’d have taken the job sooner.’
Her previous worries now seemed foolish, given how peacefully her days had passed.
‘If I can just keep working this comfortably for a few more years, then—once everyone starts wondering why I never seem to age—I’ll simply claim I’m getting married and move far away to some remote countryside…’
A smile naturally formed on Lina’s lips as she finished her thoughts.
“The duke said he wouldn’t be in the study right now. I’d better hurry and get this done before he arrives.”
Lina climbed the ladder set before the window and began taking down the curtains one by one.
At her touch, the fabric dropped to the floor with soft thuds, one piece after another.
Worried she might run into the duke, Lina worked hurriedly, her hands moving briskly.
“Whew, done. The others will come soon to hang the new curtains, so I can just leave the ladder here… I’ll take these to be washed.”
Gathering the fallen curtains into her arms, Lina staggered under their weight.
“They’re heavier than I thought…”
Though they were summer curtains and not particularly thick, their considerable length made them surprisingly heavy.
Even with both arms full, they still dragged along the floor as she walked.
Clearly, these curtains—meant for the grand window—were too much for Lina to carry alone.
“Ugh… I can barely see ahead.”
The bundle in her arms, as if to add insult to injury, completely blocked her view.
“I need to go down carefully…”
Afraid of tripping, Lina descended the stairs one cautious step at a time. But—
“Huh?”
Her foot suddenly caught on the trailing curtain, throwing her off balance instantly.
‘No!’
Lina reached desperately for the railing—but it was too late.
The white fabric slipped from her grasp, fluttering down the stairs.
‘I’m falling…!’
Her own body began tumbling down the staircase as well.
Feeling weightless from her toes upward, Lina squeezed her eyes shut, bracing for the pain.
‘…Huh? What’s this?’
By now, she should’ve heard a loud crash and felt sharp pain—but instead…
‘Why doesn’t it hurt…? And why does it feel oddly warm…?’
Lina gently opened her tightly shut eyes—and what she saw was:
“How long do you plan to stay like this?”
The duke.
