It was an assumption hard to envision. I argued that such a thing had never happened before, but he replied with a serious expression.

Myself and the Duke stared silently into the air. It was undeniably a frustrating situation.

The Duke slightly lowered his posture, his arms clasped and elbows resting on his knees, as if in prayer.

His words that I was “needed” sent a shiver down my spine. While I enjoy being someone others can rely on, this felt… dangerously joyful.

There was a way, albeit one I did not particularly favor.

“Very well. How about this: postpone the banquet. Hold a simple wedding vow ceremony in the chapel, and send only the oath document to the royal court first. Then we shall be legally married.”

“Would that not tarnish your reputation?”

“It’s fine. I don’t have much of a reputation to tarnish.”

He frowned thoughtfully, his expression unreadable, then finally spoke with resolve.

“I’ll ask again. Are you certain you wish to do this? If you’re pushing yourself too hard out of consideration for me…”
