The secret emergency meeting ended.

Ascal walked steadily toward the guest room where Schmidt was staying, having confirmed that Rublion had fallen asleep.

“I never thought even Gaven would feel the need for a young lady.”

The steward had reported minor changes since Schmidt moved into the mansion. First, Rublion, who had previously been indifferent and empty toward everything, had changed. Second, the maids had become more vibrant. This influence came directly from Anna, Schmidt’s personal maid.

She was both an all-around housemaid and an excellent ladies’ maid, responsible for dressing and grooming the lady of the house.

Her skilled makeup techniques and hair styling were more than enough to win the favor of the mansion’s maids, who quickly welcomed Anna into their circle.

The third change was one the duke himself had not noticed. The steward said that since the viscountess had stayed at the mansion, Ascal had stopped working late. Ascal corrected him, saying it wasn’t because he wasn’t busy—he instead pounded his chest firmly to emphasize it wasn’t that.

Lost in these thoughts, he found himself already at the guest room door. Ascal raised his hand to knock.

“Would it be improper to visit a young lady at this hour?”

He pulled out his pocket watch to check the time. It was still not yet bedtime.

Then he caught sight of his own reflection in the mirror inside the watch cover. Ascal gently pulled his slightly disheveled bangs back into place.

“One must appear neat when meeting others.”

He carefully brushed his shirt and trousers with his hands, then rubbed his face once more before finally feeling satisfied.

At last, he felt ready to knock. Ascal took a deep breath and firmly tapped on the door.
