Ascal’s father, Horte Artenbach, defeated the commander of the Eastern Empire during a localized war while he was still a duke. For this achievement, he was granted the Modesto Region and the title of Border Count.

Even though he lived a dissolute life, he was not stripped of his title because, before being a rogue, he was an exceptional knight who won the Emperor’s trust and a capable businessman.

Though he was utterly reckless to the point of giving Ascal trauma, he maintained propriety in everything except caring for his family.

But Arion was different. He grew up in comfort and disliked studying or training. He also took after his father in preferring women from a young age.

Despite knowing of Arion’s misdeeds, Horte made no effort to correct them. It would be more accurate to say he simply did not care.

“If Arion were to become the lord of the Modesto Region, its subjects would never be able to live normal lives.”

After sending Schmidt away, Ascal remained alone in the official office and rubbed his throbbing forehead. He had thought he had regained his composure after being beaten senseless, but that was not the case.

“He should have been sent far beyond the Empire’s borders.”

Ascal regretted not having done so.

He pressed a button on the wall of his office to summon Limon. Not long after, the diligent secretary arrived at the office.

“You summoned me?”

Ascal began to explain, step by step, the task he had been considering since the moment he saw the file.

“Search the residence where Arion stayed with his courtesans. Investigate whether he engaged in any illegal activities, examine his relationships, and look into anything that might tarnish noble dignity.”

“Yes, I will look into it immediately.”

Limon bowed respectfully. Ascal watched the back of his head and continued.
