Ophelia stared, dumbfounded, at the woman cradled in Rodric’s arms.

Had he kidnapped the limp woman? It was a reasonable suspicion. He was the kind of man who only wandered battlefields and never kept anyone close, so nothing else came to mind.

While Ophelia’s attention was fixed on Diana, Rodric’s expression hardened as he felt the unnerving chill in the hand he held.

“Ophelia.”

Startled by Rodric’s prompt, Ophelia snapped out of her daze and hurriedly began gathering the firewood she’d dropped.

“I-I’m sorry! I’ll get everything ready right away.”

Fortunately, the castle where Ophelia lived was adjacent to a lake. Yet, it was so run-down and neglected—barely deserving to be called a castle—that it offered almost no protection against the cold.

Whoosh—An eerie draft slipped in from somewhere, brushing past them as they walked down the corridor. The coldness, sharp enough to send shivers down one’s spine, prompted Ophelia to explain hastily.

“M-My room has a fire going, so it’ll be w-warm.”

Rodric, walking behind Ophelia, had already erased all expression from his face. Glancing nervously at his silence, Ophelia swallowed hard.

The indoor chill matched the frigid outdoors, with no clear boundary between inside and out. To share even a bit of his body heat, he quickened his pace and held Diana even tighter.

“I-I’m sorry.”

“For what?”
