It was deep night.

The time had passed midnight and was inching toward 1 a.m. Eun Seo, who had gone to bed early but woken up, quietly opened her eyes.

Blinking several times, her eyes quickly adjusted to the darkness. Through the fully open curtains, she could see the scene outside.

What had been light snowflakes before bedtime had now turned into large, crisp snowflakes the size of 50-won coins, steadily piling up winter outside.

The view naturally brought to mind the tale of Snow White. She closed her eyes again to try sleeping, but sleep wouldn’t come easily.

Did Snow White eat an apple?

‘I want to eat one.’

A glossy red apple, round and vivid, shimmered in her mind’s eye, making her mouth water. She longed to wash it under running water, briskly wipe it dry, and crunch into it whole, skin and all.

She’d eaten plenty at dinner, too.

Tae Ha was sleeping soundly.

Before, he used to lie sideways and hold Eun Seo tightly like a child clinging to a doll, but ever since her belly began swelling—and especially after she’d complained that his arms felt heavy—he never embraced her in his sleep, not even half-consciously.

Careful not to wake Tae Ha, Eun Seo quietly lifted the blanket. Then, ever so slowly and stealthily—as cautiously as a midnight thief—she lowered her feet onto the floor.

Slipping her feet into plush slippers, Eun Seo approached the window. Kneeling halfway on the window seat and gazing outside, she saw the courtyard blanketed entirely in untouched snow, pristine white, as if no guest had ever passed through.

“Wow.”

It looked just like fluffy white rice cake dusted with sparkling sugar, prompting Eun Seo’s admiring sigh—when suddenly, warmth enveloped her back.
