Late in the afternoon, Tae Ha headed to Yangpyeong to attend his maternal grandmother’s birthday gathering. It had been raining quite heavily in Seoul, but the sun was shining in Yangpyeong.

His maternal family had originally lived in Seongbuk-dong, but as his grandmother approached ninety, the elderly couple moved permanently to their countryside villa, saying they preferred being close to nature.

Within their private estate—over 30,000 pyeong in size and bordering the Bukhan River—there was a private dock, CCTV cameras monitoring the perimeter, and numerous staff due to the vastness of the property.

After passing through the tall iron gate, a winding path led through neatly trimmed shrubs toward the main house. Tae Ha drove past two staff quarters and parked behind the main building.

“You’re here now? Everyone’s been waiting for you.”

One of the staff recognized Tae Ha and greeted him warmly.

“It’s been a while. Is everyone in the garden?”

“Yes, nearly everyone has already arrived. This way, please.”

Tae Ha chatted amiably with the staff member as they headed toward the annex garden, where the party was in full swing.

In the brightly lit party area, three long tables were set up, each adorned with several elaborate centerpieces.

On the right side of the tables, a string quartet was performing old pop tunes, and the roughly fifty relatives who had already arrived were busily exchanging greetings.

“There you are, Tae Ha.”

Chairman Kwon, who had already arrived, walked toward him as soon as he spotted Tae Ha.

“Yes.”

“You never even come for meals these days—it’s hard to see your face.”
