Jung Woo stepped out of the car after opening the door, reading the eco-friendly sign carved into rough wooden planks. As soon as his black dress shoes touched the dirt path, a thin layer of pale dust settled on them.

Oops.

Frowning slightly, Jung Woo trudged up the dirt path, where a faint smell of manure lingered in the air.

The gentle slope continued for about fifty meters.

The arboretum wasn’t large. Indeed, it seemed so little known that aside from two ticket booth staff members, there was no one else around.

Yet once he passed through the small arch-shaped gate, dense thickets of wild roses, cornelian cherries, and bottlebrush trees gave it a genuine arboretum feel.

Colorful tulips grew neatly in their designated plots, artificially arranged, while delicate little wildflowers sprouted charmingly along the roadside, their stems still tender.

He suddenly thought of Eun Seo as being like those wildflowers.

Unlike the flashy tulips that immediately caught the eye, these flowers somehow looked pitiful—and fragile.

Ironically, these delicate blooms that seemed to need protection more than anything else had sprung up not in flowerpots but right on the bare roadside.

Pushing thoughts of Eun Seo aside, Jung Woo slowly walked along the path, already deep in early summer.

Passing over ground decorated with broken ceramic shards and following the winding trail, he soon spotted Ha Eun. She sat on a bench beside a zelkova tree, gazing at a pond covered in water lilies.

As Jung Woo took a few steps closer, Ha Eun sensed his presence and turned around. They looked at each other but didn’t bother smiling or beaming warmly.

Nor did either extend a hand for a handshake.
