Tae Ha did not take his eyes off the phone with the speaker turned on even while closing his laptop.

When the boring connection tone switched to voicemail, Tae Ha ended the call and checked his messages again. There were no messages.

Is she busy?

[I might not be able to arrive at the company by 5 PM. Don’t bother waiting and go ahead first.]

That was Eun Seo’s laughing reply to being told to come in before 5 PM.

Thinking Eun Seo was busy, Tae Ha organized his desk, buttoned up his dark navy jacket, and left his office.

There was a gathering at the Korean restaurant in GK Hill Hotel.

A dinner where Chairman Kwon summoned the presidents of affiliated companies. It was a place one had to go through at least once a year.

Woo Young and Eun Seo had reserved a different restaurant in the same hotel.

But… Eun Seo wasn’t there.

Tae Ha stopped in his tracks upon seeing Eun Seo’s empty seat at the secretary’s desk.

The musical was at eight o’clock, and he had the tickets.

What to do.

“Are you leaving now, sir?”

Assistant Han stood up from his seat.

“Yes, I’m going out with Team Leader Choi. Assistant Han, you can go home too. And…”

Tae Ha placed the musical tickets he was holding on the desk. In case the evening gathering ran late.

“What’s this, sir?”

“These are Secretary Song’s tickets, please pass them on. If she doesn’t come before Assistant Han leaves, leave a memo. Tell her to go straight to Phantom with these since they’re hers. I’d like to tell her myself, but she’s not answering her phone right now. Perhaps Assistant Han’s call…”

Tae Ha trailed off and asked Assistant Han with a bit of expectation.

“Would Assistant Han like to try?”

Assistant Han called Eun Seo as his boss wished. The boss’s gaze fixed on the mobile phone was quite burdensome, so he lowered his eyes.

However, even that call went unanswered.

“I guess the publishing house work is running late.”

“I suppose so?”

Tae Ha, somehow wanting to agree with Assistant Han’s words, made a slow retort as he left the office with Woo Young.

* * *

When Tae Ha showed no signs of coming out even after work hours, Ha Eun got out of the car. Then she took the elevator going to Tae Ha’s office.

The security guard didn’t stop her because Ha Eun had a card given by Chairman Kwon. However, the 18th floor she stepped out onto with anticipation was very quiet.

This is strange somehow.

There was no one at the secretary’s desk.

Did they already leave work?

It’s strange, given the workaholic image.

Ha Eun, feeling an inexplicable sense of unease, pulled on the office door handle. When the door didn’t budge even when pulled, she tried pushing it this time.

Likewise, the door didn’t move an inch.

No. When on earth.

Even though she had been watching so closely, she hadn’t seen Tae Ha coming out.

Furrowing her brow, she had no choice but to turn around.

If she couldn’t give him the car key today, she could always give it next time. She just didn’t like that day being extended.

Click-clack, Ha Eun turned around.

But just as she was about to pass the secretary’s desk, a yellow Post-it note caught her eye clearly. A memo written in large, hurried handwriting.

Phantom?

It was a musical theater. And ‘CEO’.

She had a hunch.

Ha Eun turned and picked up the memo. Next to it was a neatly rectangular musical ticket envelope.

‘The Phantom of the Opera’ VIP seat.

Ha Eun carefully opened the envelope. There was one ticket.

Her eyes quickly scanned the personal belongings on the desk. She saw an employee nameplate in front of the bookshelf.

, it was indeed Eun Seo’s.

‘I told her not to be so greedy, but she doesn’t know her place.’

A sudden burst of anger rose from her core.

Not knowing her place. Kwon Tae Ha was not something a worthless country girl should have.

Then she realized. The ticket being here meant Eun Seo hadn’t gone to the theater yet.

Ha Eun looked around, then opened her bag and put the ticket inside. Then she tore off a Post-it note and wrote in handwriting imitating the memo’s style and wording.

* * *

Eun Seo returned to the company after work hours had passed.

Her phone had broken down, and she had barely managed to find a service center to get it repaired, but it was beyond recovery.

Stepping out of the elevator, Eun Seo walked towards the desk. Fortunately, she had at least told Tae Ha she would go on her own.

As expected, there was no one on the 18th floor.

Eun Seo, hesitating to contact Tae Ha for fear of disturbing his gathering, picked up the receiver thinking he might say something.

And just as she was about to dial the numbers, she noticed a yellow Post-it note pinned to the desk memo board.

The hand she had raised to the receiver slid down.

Eun Seo finally tidied her hair that had become disheveled from rushing. She loosened the black band, carefully gathered all her hair into one, and tied it neatly again.

Then she sat in the chair and took out the work she had postponed to go to the publishing house.

Eun Seo turned on her laptop and waited for the screen to light up. As the screen brightened, Eun Seo placed her fingers on the keyboard.

As she was about to push aside the eco bag hanging on her elbow, she saw a crumpled proposal. Somehow it felt just like her.

Eun Seo deliberately took out that proposal and flattened the already crumpled wrinkles with her palm. It didn’t smooth out well, but thinking it looked a bit better than before, she put the proposal back in and turned her eyes to the screen.

, , ,

There were several folders, but the names didn’t register in her eyes.

Hoo.

After shaking her head slightly, Eun Seo focused on the folders with wide eyes.

Pull yourself together.

Looking at the monitor again, her eyes gradually narrowed. The letters became increasingly convex within her moist pupils.

Raising her head and roughly tidying around her eyes, Eun Seo eventually turned off the laptop.

Her small, delicate shoulders hunched over the desk trembled finely.

* * *

2nd floor lobby of Phantom Art Center.

Even in the VIP line, Tae Ha couldn’t find Eun Seo. A moment later, Woo Young came out from inside the theater, making a large X with his hands as he walked over.

At that sight, Tae Ha’s sigh mixed with lamentation settled.

Having reached the limit of his patience, Tae Ha leaned on the lobby railing and looked down the stairs.

What’s going on?

“Maybe things are going well with the publishing house and she’s having dinner or something.”

Woo Young spoke to reassure Tae Ha, but Tae Ha didn’t feel better.

Song Eun Seo wasn’t the type of person to break a promise without any contact.

“Did she lose her phone?”

Tae Ha muttered softly, looking at his own phone.

Surely, she hasn’t just gone off somewhere like this.

Even during dinner with the presidents, Tae Ha had occasionally checked his phone. But there had been not a single contact from Eun Seo.

She hadn’t even checked the messages he sent.

I should have at least found out the name of the publishing house. No, I asked, but she didn’t tell me.

What could have happened?

“She’s not at the secretary’s office or at home either.”

Woo Young also seemed worried, as shadows of concern settled under his eyes.

“This won’t do. Just in case, Woo Young, you wait here. And let me know right away if Eun Seo comes.”

“What about you?”

“I’ll go home for now.”

Tae Ha held back his words.

Because it felt like if he said it, it would come true.

The publishing house work might not have gone well, or maybe.

Tae Ha clenched his jaw and tightly closed his mouth, trying not to think about what might come next.

With that, Tae Ha ran to the parking lot. The massive horseshoe-shaped radiator grille growled roughly.

It was a distance so far he wished he could use teleportation.

Throughout the drive, whenever traffic slowed, his fingers tapped an anxious rhythm on the steering wheel. His fingers, driven by tightening worry, moved indiscriminately from the steering wheel to his lips, forehead, and chin.

It felt like his soul was wearing away.

He couldn’t just plow through the road. He couldn’t push away the cars in front.

The scenery passing by outside, having lost its color, was dry. His shoulders, taut with tension, were heavily laden with strength.

Please be there.

Muttering words like an incantation, Tae Ha sped down the road.

After a long while like that, the car finally turned onto Itaewon-ro.

The headlights climbing the hill illuminated the dark street. One by one, familiar objects entered his darkened field of vision.

Streetlights, an old security booth, tall landscaping trees guarding the fortress-like walls and mansion gates.

And a small woman, wary of the car, walking close to the roadside.

With an eco bag slung on one side, shoulders drooping about a handspan, the ponytail attached to the back of her head swaying this way and that with each plodding step.

Screech.

The car came to a stop with a loud noise. The rough vibrations and heat thoroughly colored the quiet alley.

Tae Ha, roughly closing the car door, caught up in just a few steps to the woman who turned around in surprise.

“Song Eun Seo!”

Before the words were finished, the slender arm caught in his strong grip was helplessly dragged along. Tae Ha pulled Eun Seo’s small head and shoulders into his arms just like that.

“Uh, uh.”

The sound soaked in bewilderment faded right into his chest. Eun Seo’s body also disappeared into Tae Ha’s embrace.

A faint shampoo scent mixed with the spring breeze wafted from the chest she was buried in.

It was all okay.

Not keeping the promise, not making a single call.

It seemed like everything could be forgiven as long as she hadn’t met another man. No, even if she had, he thought he might forgive her today.

But the shoulders of the woman in his arms trembled slightly.

It wasn’t his imagination that the area around his chest was getting damp.

If she wasn’t crying from joy at seeing him so desperately, there must be some other reason.

As Tae Ha was about to detach the woman clinging to him and ask what was wrong,

“I missed you.”

No sooner had she finished speaking than Eun Seo tiptoed and tightly wrapped her arms around Tae Ha’s neck. The faintly trembling voice settling by his ear, the two arms crossed behind his neck somehow ached.

“I really missed you. Really, truly.”

And every word coming from her mouth today was all the same.

“It’s sincere, sincere.”

At the strange confession, Tae Ha barely managed to remove the arms wrapped around his neck. Every time she separated from him, her two wrists clung like a child, seeming to hide something, so Tae Ha examined her face with narrowed eyes.

Everywhere his gaze landed was a mess. Seeing her red nose tip and puffy eyelids, it was clear she had been crying for a while.

“You, what’s wrong? Why are you cry…”

What cut off his question was Eun Seo’s lips. With each leaked pronunciation, it disappeared yearningly into Eun Seo’s mouth.

A warm breath surged like waves between their overlapped lips.

As Tae Ha put strength into the arms holding Eun Seo, her tiptoes that had risen into the air lightly settled onto Tae Ha’s insteps.

Eun Seo’s waist, pressed close, bent like a wildflower snapping, swaying.

And at that moment, inside the black sedan parked in front of Tae Ha’s house. The old gentleman who had been buried in the back seat straightened up and lowered the window.

The tall shadow under the orange streetlight was somehow familiar.

“Driver. That young man down there, could it be Tae Ha?”

A low, deep voice settled heavily inside the car.

An Indifferent Woman is the One Men Desire the Most

One-line summary: The female lead is actually cold-hearted and extremely rational. She has stage-by-stage relationships and won’t two-time, but there will always be someone who secretly likes her.

This novel has the following triggers, so if you’re sensitive to these, please don’t read:

1. The female lead has had many relationships, but she treated each one seriously and broke up properly.

It’s just that the men unilaterally pestered her incessantly. For the female lead, when she doesn’t like someone anymore, she simply doesn’t like them.

(This applies to her relationships with Male Lead 1, 2, 3, and 4 as well, but she’s loyal in each 1-on-1 relationship!)

2. In this novel, Male Lead 2 and the female lead kiss in a car, and Male Lead 1 sees it and beats up Male Lead 2.

The female lead calls the police and sends both Male Lead 1 and 2 to the police station! Male Lead 1 begs the female lead not to break up with him.

3. Male Lead 1 has a gentle appearance but an obsessive personality.

Male Lead 2 has a delicate and soft appearance, slightly green tea-like (two-faced).

Male Lead 3 is a youthful college student and a smart person who has secretly liked the female lead for a long time.

Male Lead 4 is the female lead’s father’s special assistant, a business elite with deep, hidden thoughts.

4. At the beginning of this novel, the female lead has already broken up with Male Lead 1 (Chapter 4) and gotten back together with Male Lead 2 (ex-boyfriend).

5. Enter with caution if you have triggers!!!

You’re bound to regret it if you skip this novel. Read the review & spoiler to find out what you might be missing!
