“Then did you see my future as well? I’m curious about what I’ll look like in 10 or 20 years from now, when I’m middle-aged or elderly. It would be nice if I was running a large pharmacy and making a name for myself as a pharmacist…”

“Jane’s future in 10 years?”

He frowned in concentration. Seeing his expression that indicated he couldn’t easily recall, I pressed him.

“You said you saw my childhood and the whole process of me growing up through your dreams. Then surely you must have seen me when I’m older too. Is it… too difficult to tell? Does the pharmacy go bankrupt? Do I end up completely broke and out on the streets?”

Even now, it’s not particularly profitable. If it weren’t for Ian, I would have closed down long ago. But if the pharmacy I’m running was really going to fail for financial reasons, Ian would help.

No, as he always tells me, he might even get me a job at the imperial palace. If he had seen such a future, he would have insisted I take a palace job, saying it was going to happen anyway.

But Ian tilted his head and hesitated to answer about my future. It seemed he genuinely didn’t know, rather than hiding something from me.

“Did you not see my future self at all?”

An uneasy feeling suddenly arose that maybe he couldn’t see it because my future didn’t exist. Am I going to die young? It’s not uncommon for pharmacists or healers to neglect their own health while treating others and die early, but…

‘No, Ian’s last proper vision of the future was when he was 6 years old. That was 17 years ago. Maybe it was too far in the future for him to see.’

Though I often felt fatigue from overwork, I was living quite healthily without any minor illnesses. At 27 years old, I was too young to be thinking about death.

The medicine Ian was taking was meant to forcibly suppress his power of future sight.

It didn’t completely eliminate his predictive abilities, so he couldn’t experience them as vividly and directly as before. He could only see things in a very indirect and metaphorical way. It was difficult to guess my future from such dreams.

Ian said with a serious face:

“Yes. Though the order is jumbled, the most recent vision of Jane I saw was you screaming and falling into my arms because a bee landed on your head. I haven’t seen anything after that.”

That was already over a year ago. A bee had come in through the window and landed on my head, startling me so much that I flailed and fell into Ian’s arms.

“What? If you had told me in advance that a bee would land on my head, I would have been careful.”

“I saw that scene in a dream, but I didn’t know exactly when it would happen.”

Fair enough. Dreams don’t come with dates and times attached. Still, I pouted and grumbled.

I was so startled, afraid of getting stung by the bee. Though I don’t have any particular allergies, that tiny body with its sharp stinger was very threatening to me.

Moreover, the buzzing sound of its wings flapping sounded like it was threatening “I’ll sting you! I’ll sting you with my stinger!” and gave me goosebumps.

Thinking about it made me shudder, and as I rubbed my arms, Ian snapped his fingers and said:

“Ah! Come to think of it, I had a dream about Jane a few days ago.”

“A dream? What kind of dream was it? Was it a good dream?”

Though his dreams weren’t clear, I brightened up at the mention of me appearing in it and asked eagerly.

“But…”

He frowned, looking displeased. I grew anxious and urged him on.

“What? Was it a strange dream? Tell me quickly, I’m curious.”

When I pressed him, he smiled. The light passing through the glass window touched his cheek, and his pale silver eyelashes cast dark shadows, painting new colors on his face.

It was like admiring a warm-toned painting. Even in the midst of my curiosity about the dream content, I found myself noticing his appearance first. I thought I must be seriously ill.

“It was a nightmare.”

“A nightmare?”

Making people needlessly anxious! Not just a dream, but a nightmare! And of all dreams, the one I appeared in was a nightmare! I urgently pressed him for details. If it was a bad dream, I should know what happened so I could prepare for something.

“Tell me in detail. What kind of dream was it exactly?”

“Jane was crushed under a huge dragon. And with a very calm expression, you said to me, ‘Your Highness the Crown Prince, I’m sorry but it will be difficult to make medicine for you from now on. As you can see, it’s because of this ferocious dragon. So please find another way on your own.'”

I imagined a dragon said to be larger than most castles in my mind. And then I imagined myself crushed beneath it. In terms of proportions, I’d probably be no bigger than a fly under a bull’s behind.

“Was the dragon sitting on top of me? It sounds terribly frightening.”

I wonder if I would even have time to be scared before perishing, yet I managed to leave such last words? Is that only possible in dreams?

“Jane wasn’t scared at all. Your tone was quite insensitive and nonchalant. I was the one who panicked. I was so afraid of losing Jane that I really didn’t know what to do. It was truly a terrible nightmare.”

It was hard to just laugh it off as a meaningless dream given Ian’s abilities.

Before taking the medicine, Ian’s dreams were as vivid as if he had experienced them directly and were very clear, but now his prophetic dreams had become quite symbolic and metaphorical. They were unclear and vague.

Therefore, interpreting his dreams was now more important than remembering their content.

In the past, there were people who specialized in interpreting prophets’ dreams, but now in the Kingdom of Stefan, not only the prophets but also books related to them were considered seditious literature and had disappeared.

As a result, his dream interpretations, without any special training in prophecy interpretation, were always a mess.

So we couldn’t predict the future from his dreams, and only after events occurred would we realize, “Ah… so that’s what it meant.”

It was a useless prophetic ability that provided no help at all. Of course, if he stopped taking the medicine, he could see much clearer visions, but there was no need to do that at the cost of his life.

So I won’t really end up crushed under a dragon. Of course, this dream doesn’t seem positive either.

“It’s an unpleasant dream.”

“I’m terribly anxious because of that dream. I think it’s a prophecy that Jane will be swayed by a powerful nobleman and expose my secret.”

Hearing those words, I glared at him with an incredulous expression.

“You said I was flailing under that dragon. How can you interpret that as me betraying you?”

“I told you, you weren’t flailing but speaking very calmly. And dreams are full of metaphors, so it’s all in the interpretation. So tell me, what’s your wish?”

He had been worrying about me being swayed by other nobles, but then abruptly asked about my wish.

“Why are you suddenly asking about my wish?”

“To keep a secret continuously, you either have to kill or bribe. Killing is the cleanest method, but if you die, who will make my medicine?”

Talking about killing being the cleanest method while smiling. What a brutal joke.

“I’m glad I’m the only one who can make Your Highness’s medicine. I’m thrilled that my life seems to have been extended. But what should I do? I don’t really have any particular wish. Oh, if I had to choose a wish, maybe becoming 10 years younger? No, being younger isn’t always good.”

“Then how about 17? I’d welcome you becoming younger than me, but unfortunately I don’t have the ability to turn back your time…”

He told me to name a wish that was more feasible and that only he could grant, something no one else could offer.

“Then! Becoming a magician. A real magician who can heal people without medicinal ingredients. Then I wouldn’t need to pay for medicine costs, and I could heal people, so I’d become super rich!”

“Why a magician of all things? Jane, you’re perfect as you are now. There’s no need to become one of those stupid bunch.”

Ian disliked magicians as much as he disliked healers. He had been secretly searching for someone who could change and maintain his eye color for a long time, but decent magicians were practically extinct.

“These days, magicians are like clowns who can only produce small sparks from their hands. They have no real ability but strut around calling themselves magicians.”

I nodded in agreement with his words.

The magician race, fond of war and full of curiosity, was originally not long-lived. Many of them died during the war where magicians were massively deployed.

Even after that, the mortality rate of magicians remained high, with more magicians dying from various stupid acts in the name of researching and developing magic than those who died on the battlefield.

There were surprisingly many magicians who died in fires while practicing fireballs in small laboratories.

An ordinary person would know without being told that using fire, especially an attack magic like fireball, in a confined space is dangerous, but it seems these so-called geniuses were not born with such common sense.
