At my words, he rolled his eyes over the list. Though puzzled by my claim, he checked the list as I confidently said my name would be there. Fortunately, my name was on the list.
Still skeptical, he asked, “Are you Claire Mackein Hydrangea?” a couple of times. Then, as if recalling recent stories about me, he said, “Ah!” recognizing me.
“I’ve heard about your recent ennoblement, but this is my first time seeing you.”
His attitude became much more respectful, though an air of displeasure remained, perhaps regretting his rudeness to a countess.
I wasn’t particularly bothered. More than my title, I just wanted to be led to the examination hall.
He shrugged his narrow shoulders and said in a meek voice, “I apologize for the late introduction. I am Memelt… a baron.”
His mention of ‘baron’ was so quiet I barely caught it by reading his lips.
Having exchanged formalities, it seemed appropriate to ask for guidance to the exam hall.
“Baron Memelt, could you guide me to the healer exam so I don’t arrive late?”
“Of course. This way, please.”
He led me in a different tone than before. His dramatic change in behavior left me feeling odd. It was easy to see why nobles were often accused of acting pompously and unpleasantly.
I quickly straightened up. It’s important not to let a sense of superiority influence my behavior.
I followed him into the examination hall.
There weren’t many people inside. Even though I arrived just in time for the exam, there were only about ten people sitting there.
“Is this the only group taking the exam?”
“Twenty years ago, when the war was raging, many people used to take the healer exam, but now, after the war has completely ended, most prefer the knight exam.”
Few people were taking the healer exam to treat patients. Unlike the eldest sons who could inherit their parents’ titles, other nobility-born individuals who couldn’t inherit titles needed to fulfill certain conditions to ensure their status, one of which was to make significant contributions to the nation.
Usually, they become knights and serve in the royal guard.
During the war 20 years ago, people often chose the healer exam over the knight exam to avoid being sent to the battlefield. But now, with the war over, the healer exam seems to have lost its popularity.
“I see. Thanks for the guidance.”
“If you need anything, please call on me. I wish you good luck.”
As the man left with a servile expression, a thin man with glasses announced the start of the exam.
The exam wasn’t difficult; it was so easy that I was concerned about its ability to discriminate effectively.
It felt odd writing ‘Claire Mackein Hydrangea’ instead of ‘Jane’ in the name section. I checked it several times, worried that writing the wrong name might lead to disqualification. It seemed unlikely to fail due to incorrect answers, but failing because of a name error seemed plausible.
The results of the written exam came out quickly.
As expected, I passed easily. Surprisingly, most of the few who took the test scored quite low and were disqualified.
Only three of us remained for the practical exam.
