It feels good to arrive early at the Medical Bureau just before sunrise. I get a sense of anticipation that I’ll spend the day productively, and the crisp air—not yet fully warmed by the sun—feels refreshingly cool.

“After all, the Medical Bureau really is the best.”

Especially when I look at the neatly arranged shelves packed full of medicinal herbs, I feel like a squirrel that’s tucked away a plentiful stash of acorns in its little wooden burrow before winter arrives. It’s reassuring, somehow.

Moreover, recently, the number of visitors coming to the Medical Bureau has slowly begun to increase.

It didn’t seem like word had spread about me awakening the gravedigger’s daughter or advising Rene, the former palace chef. Instead, people appeared to be coming out of curiosity about me being the first physician in the Carlobanian Empire.

For a while, no one came at all, and I felt disappointed—but now, even with just a handful of visitors, I’m starting to feel that familiar sense of purpose again.

“The medicine isn’t even priced expensively…”

The only regret was that, because I’d become known as an imperial physician, few people came—likely due to the misconception that treatment fees would be high.

The nobles didn’t visit anyway, as they sought healers instead of apothecaries, but it seemed commoners were hesitant due to cost concerns.

“But I can’t exactly lure customers by setting prices too low, either.”

The people who ran apothecaries in the capital of the Carlobanian Empire were, like me, individuals who worked with a sense of professional duty. It meant there were hardly any apothecaries driven purely by greed.

However, medicinal herbs—being specialty crops—often had inherently high production costs. Occasionally, customers assumed apothecaries profited greatly from selling expensive medicine, but that was absolutely not the case.

The prices were high simply because the base ingredients themselves were costly.

In my current situation at the Medical Bureau, since materials were supplied by the Imperial Palace, the high base cost wasn’t a major issue—but even so, I couldn’t just hand out medicine for free. For now, I kept the prices identical to what I’d charged at my previous apothecary.

Still, I couldn’t help but wonder if, as a palace physician, I ought to handle duties beyond those of a regular apothecary—regardless of profit.
