A few days later, I steeled my resolve as I prepared to attend Viscountess Monica’s banquet. This time, I was determined to mingle with as many people as possible and spread word that I’d become a physician.

Though I couldn’t exactly demonstrate my knowledge of medicinal herbs right there in the banquet hall, simply making people aware of the Medical Bureau’s presence in the capital would already be a gain.

After all, the hardest part was always getting that initial word-of-mouth started. Once curious individuals or those eager to befriend me began showing up, I could gradually reveal my capabilities.

Yet, despite meticulously dressing up with Ileina’s help and arriving at Viscountess Monica’s banquet full of optimism, I suddenly felt as though I’d been slapped across the face.

Before I’d even exchanged greetings with anyone, Healer Memelt stormed up to me and started interrogating me outright.

“Aren’t you, a physician, overstepping by acting as if you’re some kind of healer?”

“What do you mean, ‘overstepping’?”

“Healing patients is a healer’s duty, not a physician’s! Just what did you do to Chef Rene?”

“What did I do? I examined him. You, on the other hand, should stop exploiting people’s illnesses to swindle them—you’ll bring divine punishment upon yourself.”

“Who’s swindling anyone? I never liked the idea of a woman pretending to be a healer in the first place. Know your place and quietly prepare for marriage instead of meddling in others’ affairs.”

His rat-like face spewed rude, condescending remarks, making me want to punch him right then and there. Only the thin thread of reason left in me prevented such a disaster.

“You’d do well to remember your own place. Aren’t you Viscount Memelt? For a viscount to be so insolent toward a countess—I’ll accept your apology if you bow your head to me right now.”

At my warning, his expression twisted fiercely. I hadn’t said anything wrong—after all, who was being disrespectful to someone of higher standing?

But if he were the type to take such a warning to heart, he wouldn’t have been so rude in the first place. He sneered at me and replied,

“Making a fuss over a bare title no one even respects. Do you have any idea how many influential people support me? I’m on close terms with both Duke Commander and Viscountess Monica.”
