Even though I said it was a joke, Ian stared at me with a dissatisfied expression, as if he could read my inner thoughts. At times like this, I couldn’t help but wonder if Ian didn’t possess the power of prophecy but rather mind-reading.

“But seriously, it’s not true, is it? Just be honest with me. I promise I won’t tell anyone. Not that anyone would believe it even if I did……”

Seemingly tired of my jokes, he reached out his hand toward me and said,

“Enough nonsense. Just take my hand. It’ll be easier to trip once it gets dark.”

Without a word, I took his hand. After all, the graveyard truly was perfect for stumbling once the sun had set.

As twilight fell, the graveyard—devoid of any light—felt eerie and desolate. The gravedigger had claimed the graveyard was more beautiful at night, but how could one appreciate beauty when there was nothing to see?

“They say graveyard flowers glow after sunset, but it’s just pitch black. Though, admittedly, it does feel strangely mystical right now!”

The sight of elaborately carved tombstones lined up in rows was unusual, and the red sunset descending over them was remarkably poetic.

But the graveyard flowers, supposedly glowing at night, showed no change at all. Perhaps because my expectations had been so high, disappointment washed over me. Just as I began to think it was time to head back—

“Ah! That’s glowing now, right?”

At last, as if greeting the moonlight, the graveyard flowers began to emit a faint glow, one by one. Ian and I stopped walking and waited for all the flowers to light up.

It felt as though we’d stepped into the heart of a star-filled night sky. With no houses or streetlamps around, the only thing visible was the soft glow of the graveyard flowers illuminating the darkness.

We stood there for a long while, holding hands, watching the dim, hazy light gently settle over the entire graveyard. Once I’d grown slightly accustomed to the beautiful sight, I spoke.

“I’m really looking forward to visiting the Imperial Capital Library. The collection must be enormous—so many different kinds of books.”
