“There it is. The blue-roofed house the old woman mentioned.”

“Oh! It really is… Wow…”

As I kept marveling aloud, the corners of his mouth lifted slightly, evidently pleased. Not because I’d flattered him to make him happy—but because I was genuinely astonished.

If only I could find my way around so easily. It seemed God had been so preoccupied granting me apothecary skills that He forgot to give me the basic ability to navigate or sense direction.

“By the way, you really meant to start over from the apothecary again?”

“I’m… somewhat lacking in my sense of direction…”

“Not ‘somewhat’—you’re seriously lacking.”

“Well, anyway. If I try to take shortcuts and start from somewhere in the middle, I always end up wandering off course and wasting two or three times as long. Today, though, thanks to Your Royal Highness finding me, that won’t happen, which is wonderful.”

“No wonder I have no choice but to stick close to you. If you need to go anywhere, be sure to call for me so we can go together.”

“Well, all right. It’s an honor that Your Royal Highness would offer to be my guide—but if you insist, I won’t refuse.”

At my words, Ian smiled, clearly satisfied. He must’ve felt just like someone walking a well-behaved puppy.

On the way back today, I should stop by and buy some jerky for that little dog living in front of the apothecary. Since I can’t scratch under Ian’s chin, I’ll have to scratch under that pup’s instead.
