“Hello, Case. My name is Claire. I’ve come to see you on behalf of Apothecary Jane.”

“Hello.”

“May I examine you?”

“Yes.”

I asked Case various questions about his symptoms to check whether there had been any changes in his condition recently.

“Have you been having trouble sleeping lately?”

“When I lie down, it feels hard to breathe, so I sleep sitting up like this.”

Case showed me how he usually slept, hugging a cushion made of tightly rolled coarse cloths.

“That must have been hard. Grandmother, how have you been managing his medicine all this time?”

“Ever since Apothecary Jane passed away, we’ve been getting medicine from Pharmacist Jefferson over at the west gate, but it’s expensive, so we haven’t been able to give it to him regularly.”

Tears quickly welled up in her eyes.

“The medicine from Pharmacist Jefferson did help for a while, but without it, the child can’t even sleep properly like this….”

I knew Pharmacist Jefferson well. He was a skilled apothecary who had run his shop for a long time.

Rather than focusing on the patient’s condition, he tended to regard their financial situation as a secondary matter, believing that once one regained health, money could always be earned. That said, he never deliberately charged excessive prices.

“Pharmacist Jefferson is indeed skilled. However, Case’s illness is chronic and can’t be cured all at once. Jane used to prescribe herbs with milder effects but at affordable prices so they could be taken consistently, whereas Jefferson likely recommended stronger, more expensive remedies.”
