It was unavoidable—that the fire happened, and that I died. So even if everything burned down and nothing remained, I wouldn’t despair.

But seeing it all with my own eyes, the sheer devastation brought tears welling up uncontrollably.

“Young lady, you must have received much kindness from Apothecary Jane as well.”

I lifted my head at the warm hand patting my shoulder. A kind-faced grandmother stood beside me.

“Both my grandson and I owe her a great debt.”

“Grandmother…”

She was the woman who came to the apothecary once every fortnight without fail to pick up medicine.

She had lost both her son and daughter-in-law to the plague that once swept through the capital and raised her only remaining grandson alone.

Her misfortune didn’t end there. Her sole surviving blood relative was frail and had long suffered from consumption.

Though she herself was elderly and barely able to care for herself, she always came personally to fetch his medicine.

Despite her poverty, she never failed to bring the exact payment—no matter how much I insisted she didn’t need to.

Tears glistened in the corners of her deeply wrinkled eyes. Wiping them roughly away, she placed a bouquet on the ground, closed her eyes, and clasped her hands together as if praying for Jane’s soul.

Only then did I look down at the ground. My gaze had been fixed solely on the charred ruins of the apothecary, so I hadn’t noticed what lay before me.

Flowers, lit candles, and handmade-looking dolls filled the area.
