“You received this and just let it go?”

Ileina was shocked as she looked at the crystal I had received from Ian. The mention of it being one of the “Three Great Treasures” had sounded half-joking, but seeing her carefully inspect it while wearing gloves made it clear this was indeed a precious item.

I’d suspected it was valuable because of Chief Steward Simmons’ reaction, but I hadn’t realized just how extraordinary it truly was.

“It looked expensive, so I tried to return it, but he refused to take it back.”

Ian insisted he wouldn’t accept it and even said he’d give it to Ileina’s child as a toy once the baby was born.

Since Ian reacted that way, I’d assumed it was merely something moderately valuable. Of course, I never actually intended to hand it over as a child’s plaything, so I’d kept it carefully stored away.

“My hands are trembling—I’m afraid I might drop it. Let me just put it away for now.”

She placed the bead inside a box lined with velvet cushioning and set it on the table. But almost immediately, she reopened the lid, glanced at me briefly, then said somewhat bashfully,

“It’d be a shame to keep something so beautiful locked away in the dark.”

I nodded in agreement and asked her,

“I knew it was a valuable artifact, but I had no idea it was this significant. Who decides these rankings anyway? Like the ‘Three Great Treasures’—how exactly does that work?”

Was there someone within the Imperial Palace whose job was to appraise and rank precious gems as they appeared? That seemed plausible for the royal court—someone entrusted with storing and managing such jewels might very well establish rankings.

Ileina shook her head at my question.

“I’m not sure. I’ve never really thought about it. People just start calling something one of the ‘Three’ or ‘Five’ Great Treasures whenever an exceptionally rare item appears—but the list changes often… Still, its importance never diminishes.”

“Oh, I see.”
