Startled by the sound, I turned around to see the vase holding the bouquet I’d received from Eloyd shattered into pieces. I lowered my hands from my ears and spoke loudly.

“What on earth just happened! Are you hurt?”

That massive vase—shattered! What could possibly have occurred in such a short moment!

Ian held up his empty hands as if it were nothing and said,

“Sorry. A glass bead slipped from my hand.”

“A glass bead slipping from your hand managed to smash that solid, huge vase?”

In response to my question, Ian merely shrugged.

He looked as though it couldn’t be helped, but I couldn’t help feeling bewildered. Just what would one have to do for a glass bead slipping from one’s hand to crash into and shatter a vase?

Water and flowers spilled from the broken vase, making a complete mess of the floor. Among the shards of porcelain, the glass bead was visible.

It hadn’t shattered completely, but the spot where it had struck the vase was whitened from abrasion.

When I moved to pick up the bead, Ian held me back.

“It’s dangerous—don’t go near it.”

“But still, it was a gift I received…”

“I’ll just give you another one instead.”
