I closed Grandfather’s notebook.

“If I can’t even make sense of the writing, I might as well try making perfume—maybe even craft some for Ileina.”

In truth, perfume-making wasn’t something an imperial physician was supposed to do. Ever since the Perfume Guild had collapsed, prices had skyrocketed and perfumes had become difficult to obtain.

Eventually, the constant inquiries directed to me led me to take it up as a side job, supplying perfumes to Ileina’s trading company.

Initially, I’d viewed perfume-making merely as an excuse to meet Ian or simply as a way to earn extra money, but I soon discovered it held far more charm than I’d expected—especially since I spent so much time with Ileina, who adored perfumes, that I gradually grew interested myself.

She never fixated on just one kind of perfume; instead, she changed scents depending on the occasion, her mood, or even her attire and the size of the venue. She paid close attention not only to the fragrance itself but also to how long it lasted.

For confined indoor spaces, she preferred subtle, non-irritating scents; for outdoor activities like strolling through a garden, she added fragrances that repelled insects; and in grand ballrooms, she chose rich, potent scents to assert her presence through aroma.

That wasn’t all. She also cared deeply about packaging. When I tried delivering perfumes in plain glass bottles, Ileina strongly objected.

She insisted that designing containers that complemented each fragrance would allow me to earn considerably more. She even suggested adding color to the perfumes themselves.

As she spoke, she showed me the perfumes she owned.

Each bottle she presented radiated its own distinct personality and charm.

Crystal flasks dyed in hues of pink, purple, green, yellow, and orange felt like objets d’art simply arranged atop a table.

Each perfume bottle bore a slender leather strap with a metal label attached. Upon closer inspection, the label’s design looked rather familiar.
