Unlike the previous occasion when female guests had been invited, the table was now laden not with delicacy and elegance, but with hearty, rich dishes meant to build flesh and strength.

At the center of the table sat a whole roasted turkey, flanked by marinated and grilled young veal ribs, a chicken stuffed generously with minced meat after its innards had been removed, steak topped with creamy mushroom sauce, and lamb slow-cooked with an assortment of vegetables and cheese—overall, the table overflowed with meat.

It was an extravagant spread for just four people.

“I thought you might miss the meals of your household now that you’ve returned to the Carlobanian Empire after so long, so I tried my best to recreate them. I heard the Eloyd family particularly favors meat-based dishes. Also, rather than serving individual portions, it’s customary in your house to place everything on one table and carve servings as needed. Admittedly, this style is unfamiliar to me.”

“Our family values efficiency, so we’re more accustomed to serving ourselves directly from shared dishes rather than relying on servers. Thank you for accommodating us—it all looks delicious.”

“I’m glad to hear that. I hope it tastes good too.”

“If it’s something Ileina prepared, it can’t possibly be anything but delicious. Pour me a drink, would you?”

“Thank you.”

Shuri filled his wine glass to the brim. He’d heard that among nobles, there were specific etiquettes for pouring wine.

Instead of filling the glass completely, one was supposed to pour only about one-third full to allow the wine to breathe, swirling it several times before drinking. Yet Shuri poured it right up to the rim.

The recipient, however, didn’t seem to mind. It was Ileina who exclaimed in surprise, “How can you pour so much?” Shuri merely shrugged, and Lord Eloyd assured her it was fine.

“Not at all. This is actually better. In my family, we each keep our own bottle of wine and pour for ourselves—it prevents the teasing sensation of not having enough.”

“Is that so? Do knights usually do this? Shuri did the same at our very first meal together.”

She instructed a maid to place a wine bottle beside him—and one for Shuri as well. Ileina and I, meanwhile, were served raspberry juice instead of wine.
