To go so far as to uproot the sacred tree…

Regardless of how impressively proactive the Emperor was in trying to comfort the Empress, it was hard to understand why he’d uproot the sacred tree from her beloved hometown village.

If I were the Empress, I doubted I’d find such an act pleasing. Thinking of the villagers back home grieving over the loss of their revered sacred tree, I might even feel guilty for being the reason behind it.

〈Her Imperial Majesty the Empress seems so pitiful.〉

〈Indeed. What the Empress missed most was the seaside of her hometown with its sandy shores. Since they couldn’t possibly bring the ocean here, they could only substitute it with a small lake. If there had been skilled mages, they might have even recreated the salty sea breeze through illusion magic.〉

Ian clearly didn’t grasp why I felt such pity for the Empress.

At that moment, I simply brushed it off, thinking a commoner like myself could never hope to comprehend the thought processes of royalty. After all, the Imperial Palace of the Carlobanian Empire was so vast that even creating an entire estate within it wouldn’t stand out at all.

Thus, it was only natural that I’d get lost—not because I was unusually bad with directions, but because the palace itself was the problem.

[This is the timeline separator]

“That’s beyond my ability. If you don’t have a wish I can grant, how about marrying me instead?”

At Ian’s words, her eyes widened in surprise. She seemed to be trying to gauge whether he was joking or serious. Apparently deciding it was a joke, she replied with,

“Your Royal Highness, my ears must be playing tricks on me. I must have heard something strange. Could you please repeat that? Unless, of course, you weren’t just proposing to me.”

Ian felt slightly wronged. He’d spoken with complete sincerity—why did she insist on interpreting it as a joke?

“I’ll say it again. Marry me.”

Would she understand this time?

Jane frowned slightly and stared intently at him. Whenever she looked at him like that, a smile always crept unbidden onto Ian’s lips.

Strangely, even his usually stern expression would melt away instantly before her, like frost under the spring sun.

Ian forced back his smile. If he laughed again now, she’d surely dismiss his proposal as another jest. She studied his face slowly and carefully, as if trying to determine whether he was truly serious.

While Jane observed him, Ian took the chance to look his fill at her.

‘I see. That expression means she’s baffled about why I’m acting this way toward her.’

Having known Jane for so long, Ian could roughly guess her thoughts just from her expression.

She thought her exotic appearance wasn’t particularly attractive.

Ian felt he could hold her and praise for hours how beautifully her deep, dark eyes matched her lovely smile.

Though she considered her exotic looks—slightly different from those of people in the Carlobanian Empire—as unremarkable, to Ian, even that made her utterly special.

Yet, it wasn’t her physical beauty that made Ian love her.

He was certain that no matter what form she took—even if cursed by some unknown mage into the appearance of an old crone—he’d recognize and love her at first glance. Because she was someone truly special to him.

Predictably, she once again took his words as a joke.

Without even realizing his feelings, she brought up the blacksmith lad. What was so impressive about a mere blacksmith who hammered iron all day that she’d reject a Crown Prince’s proposal?

The Crown Prince resolved then and there to ensure that blacksmith would soon be unable to operate his business within the capital.

He needed to send anyone who stirred even the slightest interest in her far away immediately. If he carelessly ignored some insignificant fellow and Jane ended up falling for him and deciding to marry him, that would be unacceptable.

Expelling a single blacksmith from the capital was no great trouble for the Crown Prince. He’d already dealt with men lingering around Jane more times than he could count—though she remained completely unaware of it.

Anyone who showed interest in her or tried to win her favor by circling around her was quietly prevented from setting foot in the capital under various pretexts.

Since she wouldn’t approve, he always acted discreetly. His affection for Jane had lasted so long that such efforts felt entirely natural to him.

Though irritated that she’d reject his proposal over a mere blacksmith’s apprentice, he could only smile wearily, knowing—as always—that she’d dismissed his words as playful teasing.

He wished to spend more time with her, but a steward arrived to urge him to attend an official meeting, forcing him to send her away earlier than he’d hoped.

That meeting had been called because of Daniel. He was nothing but trouble in every possible way.

He’d insisted on borrowing someone else’s horse, claiming he’d find a way to ride it. Ian had anticipated trouble—the horse had a notoriously vicious temperament—but he’d expected at worst a few broken limbs for Daniel.

If his neck had snapped, well, that couldn’t be helped… But Lady McKane had foolishly stepped in to save him, making everything even more complicated. It might have been better to just let Daniel break his neck after all.

‘On top of this unsettling dream leaving me anxious, I now have to send Jane off alone to the apothecary.’

All because of that useless younger brother, greedy for things beyond his reach…

Ian decided then and there to banish his troublesome brother far from the capital. Though eliminating him entirely might seem ideal, that would inevitably create its own set of annoying complications.

Just imagining the greedy, talkative nobles chattering nonsense about the royal bloodline being too thin and the nation’s security at risk if Daniel died and he remained the sole heir gave him a headache.

It wasn’t that he feared the Emperor taking another consort and producing a rival heir.

He simply didn’t want to stir up unnecessary trouble by provoking a sleeping lion. The nobles would never stay quiet if the Emperor were to take another consort.

Their foolishness rivaled Daniel’s own stupidity. Some even believed the Emperor took no second consort solely because of the Empress’s jealousy.

Most of them hoped to persuade the Emperor to place their own daughters in that position. Pure fantasy.

No matter how much they pretended concern for the Carlobanian Empire’s future, it was meaningless. The Emperor cared only for the Empress.

If ever forced to choose between the Empress and the Carlobanian Empire, the Emperor would pick the Empress without the slightest hesitation.

He was the kind of man who wouldn’t feel even a shred of guilt, even if his choice caused every person in the empire to perish.

Ian had no complaints about that. If ever faced with a choice between the safety of the Carlobanian Empire and Jane’s well-being, he knew without hesitation which he’d choose. His decision would undoubtedly mirror the Emperor’s.

The Emperor’s obsession was solely with the Empress, and he refused to share her with anyone—not even his own children.

Though it was only natural for a mother to care for her children, the Emperor found even this distasteful. His gaze would turn icy the moment his children drew even the slightest share of the Empress’s attention.

Ian was thoroughly fed up with the Emperor’s twisted obsession toward the Empress. Watching her wither away under the weight of his suffocating love made it clear just how exhausting such feelings could be for the one who received them.

Even as a child, Ian had resolved never to become like that. But blood seemed impossible to defy—his father’s distorted fixation had been etched deep into Ian’s very veins.

At the age of six, a sudden fever struck him, bewildering everyone. He suffered from relentless high fevers day and night and was plagued by dreams filled with incomprehensible visions.

When the boundary between dream and reality blurred, his eyes turned red. At first, the redness didn’t last long, but it was enough to send Chief Steward Simmons into a panic.

Simmons frantically summoned every reputed healer he could find, but Ian knew exactly who he needed. When he demanded they bring the blind apothecary, Simmons looked utterly baffled.

Yet, having already resigned himself to helplessness—and despite Ian being only six years old—Simmons, ever loyal, would have brought a shaman from the Kingdom of Stefan if Ian had asked for one instead.

After repeatedly losing consciousness from his soaring fever and finally regaining awareness, the first thing he saw was the face of a girl brimming with concern.

The moment their eyes met—her dark eyes slightly larger than most others—the only thought filling his mind was, ‘She’s mine.’

It wasn’t that Ian was easily smitten, nor that she possessed extraordinary beauty.

True, she had a soft, calm voice that eased others’ anxieties, freckles dotting her nose that seemed endearing, reddish hair, and dark eyes that appeared lovely.

But even if she’d looked entirely different, it would have made no difference.

Male lead is a clingy little husband

One-line summary: The male lead is initially an arrogant, noble, love-deprived brat, later a cute, clingy, scheming little jealous one.

Introduction:

One day, Lu Yuner’s soul transmigrates into a female-dominant world. She enters the Imperial Academy and takes up the position of a doctoral instructor, teaching classes and grading schoolwork.

One day, she encounters the young prince Su Qingwan secretly skipping class from the male academy.

As a result, Su Qingwan is punished.

From then on, Su Qingwan sees Lu Yuner as a “thorn in his side”.

But before long, this “thorn” becomes the person he cherishes most, and he goes to great lengths to win Lu Yuner’s affection.

Mini scene 1:

One day, the sun is high in the sky but Su Qingwan still hasn’t gotten up for class.

Servant Xiaoyuan: “Young prince, it’s time for class. You’ll be late otherwise.”

Su Qingwan says arrogantly: “I’m not going. I am the esteemed prince, my status is so noble, why should I suffer this hardship? Besides, isn’t learning all this just to please women? Hmph, they’re not worthy!”

Mini scene 2:

After Su Qingwan falls for someone, he completely changes. He no longer skips class and diligently learns how to be a good husband and father. But he discovers that Sister Yuner is always surrounded by admirers.

Drunk and overcome with jealousy one day, he clings to Lu Yuner, crying beautifully like a pear blossom in the rain.

Su Qingwan: “Qingwan likes Sister Yuner.”

Lu Yuner: “Young prince, you’re drunk.”

Su Qingwan: “Qingwan isn’t drunk. Qingwan likes Sister Yuner, likes you so much, likes you to bits…” Before he can finish, Lu Yuner’s eyes flash with emotion and she leans in closer.

[Reading Guide]

1. The female lead is gentle, gracious, humble and polite but not weak. The male lead is initially an arrogant, noble, love-deprived brat, later a cute, clingy, scheming little jealous one.

2. 1v1, a bit torturous in the beginning but definitely sweet later on.
