Ian, having returned to the imperial capital, quietly gazed down at his hand wrapped in bandages. Though the wound was still throbbing and aching sharply due to its severity, to Ian, it brought only a pleasant kind of pain.

Jane was puzzled by the injury on his knuckles. She couldn’t quite grasp how stabbing the back of his hand with a small, dull trowel could possibly cause such a wound.

‘Should I have held back a little? Still, a bigger wound means Jane would worry more—that’s not so bad.’

He’d been angry, and in that moment, pressed harder than intended, piercing deeper than planned. He’d only meant for it to bleed moderately, but ended up with a wound severe enough to hinder the use of his hand for a while.

‘Daniel…’

Though it wasn’t entirely unpleasant—Jane had treated him with a worried expression, and if the scar remained, she’d fuss over it endlessly—he was irritated by the fact that Daniel was the reason he’d needed to inflict the wound in the first place.

Jane saw the tension between Ian and Daniel as nothing more than petty squabbling between brothers close in age, but Ian didn’t consider Daniel his younger brother at all. He was merely an annoying, bothersome presence.

Daniel, too, didn’t particularly like Ian. He behaved like a child who believed all the love their parents withheld from him was stolen by Ian, acting as though Ian had robbed him of their affection. Ian found such behavior contemptible.

‘Fool!’

Daniel blamed Ian even though he himself desired something unattainable.

The Empress could not show affection to either of her sons, Ian or Daniel, because the Emperor did not wish it. That simple truth was lost on the idiot.

Had Daniel been merely foolish, Ian would have simply ignored him. But Daniel never ceased provoking Ian, convinced that Ian had monopolized everything rightfully his.

Ian had been named Crown Prince long ago only because the Emperor—who cared for no one except the Empress—wanted to offload his duties onto someone convenient, yet Daniel resented Ian for never giving him a chance to compete for the throne.

Though Ian hadn’t particularly desired the position himself, he wasn’t generous enough to surrender what was his to someone else.

Moreover, in Ian’s eyes, Daniel had never made any effort to become a worthy Crown Prince.
