“The monsters are evolving.”

Gillian said nothing to Elizabeth’s report.

He would’ve been mistaken for a wellcrafted statue if not for the faint furrow of his brows.

He held his forehead as if in pain, yet remained still.

“Though the exact numbers haven’t been confirmed since last evening, our estimates indicate it’s less than half of last year’s wave.”

“So the numbers are half, but it took the same amount of time?”

Effectively, it took twice as long.

There were no rookies among the commanders of the fortresses; all were in their prime, in their thirties.

The implication was clear.

“The monsters have become stronger?”

There was no other explanation.

“We can’t be certain about their attack strength; it has always overwhelmed humans. But their regeneration speed seems faster than before.”

“Faster regeneration?”

“Unless hit consecutively, they will regenerate.”

“I wasn’t aware.”

At Gillian’s words, Elizabeth smiled bitterly.

I suppose so.

How could he know about consecutive hits? All his attacks were effective.

Especially, wounds inflicted with aura did not heal.

It was imbued with the power to nullify.

It was only natural for Gillian, the Duke of Balrock, to be unaware of regeneration speed.

Feeling the difference, Elizabeth shuddered with a light sense of disappointment.

“Did we have casualties during the cleanup?”

“No, just that the cleanup time was longer. If our assumption is correct, we might need to reconsider the efficacy of our antimonster weapons.”

Catapults and trebuchets.

Although trebuchets, which crush monsters, are effective, sourcing massive rocks was a task.

Once used, the rocks shattered upon impact, rendering them unusable.

With spears, the situation was somewhat better, but ineffective against monsters with tough skin.

Especially now, with faster regeneration, spears might become entirely useless.

“…”

Frustrating to think about.

I might end up relying solely on Duke Balrock.

A deep sense of powerlessness made him sigh.

“Scared?”

“No.”

“Then?”

“It’s frustrating to feel so powerless.”

“You’re ambitious to compare yourself to the monsters.”

Though he had been serious before, Gillian burst into cheerful laughter.

His long, deep eyes softened, and a captivating smile spread across his formerly expressionless face.

Elizabeth found it unfamiliar, having only ever seen him swing his sword without mercy.

“Don’t worry. Soon, you won’t have to struggle with monsters.”

“We’ll do our best as well.”

Gillian didn’t respond.

“Let’s end the report here and meet again tonight. I received a letter; everyone is gathering tonight. As Kei suggested, we need strategies to deal with these ‘changed’ monsters.”

“Yes, understood.”

“It’s a good time to think about fortress renovations as well.”

With that, Gillian gestured toward the exit.

His silver hair shone, nearly blinding Elizabeth, who had to quickly look away.

It was as if that light was piercing her eyes.

She hurriedly saluted and left.

As she was closing the door, Elizabeth unintentionally collided with someone.

“Ah!”

“Oops!”

Thinking she had bumped shoulders, something instead toppled over. Elizabeth reached out and grabbed.

The slender and soft arm she grasped.

A soft voice.

“Thank you.”

At the woman’s gratitude, Elizabeth’s eyebrows furrowed.

It was the Duchess.

The rumored Princess of Termina.

Bianca Termina.

She had never seen the princess before and knew nothing of her, but Elizabeth recognized her instantly.

It seems the rumors of the empire’s greatest beauty were not exaggerated.
Elizabeth had never once considered seeing a beauty like Gillian Barlock again.

The petite face that seemed to fit in one hand had features tightly packed together.

A stout nose, plump cheeks that were not too fatty.

From a slender jawline to red and plump lips, there was not a single feature that was not charming.

However, what captivated Elizabeth’s gaze were the large, transparent blue eyes.

It was the most common color in the Northern Territory, so she had never thought of it as particularly special.

However, the princess’s eyes were different.

Perhaps they felt like a deep, large lake that you could cleanly see to the bottom of.

What snapped Elizabeth out of her reverie was a soft voice.

“Thank you.”

Good heavens.

Only then did Elizabeth realize she was still holding onto the princess.

Her neck flushed red instantly at the thought of acting foolishly.

The rising heat felt fully real.

“Thanks to you, I didn’t fall.”

“It’s nothing. I should have been more careful.”

“I didn’t know you were there.”

Her gentle tone and lovely voice had the power to make anyone listen intently.

Utterly unpleasant.

“Excuse me.”

As she let go of the hand she had been holding, Elizabeth gave a slight nod.

For a moment, she noticed that the wrist peeking through the sleeves was flushed red.

“…”

“I’m fine, sir.”

As if knowing where Elizabeth’s gaze landed, again, a kind word returned.

Neither a flirty gesture nor a twinkling eye.

Male lead is a Divorced Husband

She said to him: “Tell me, what makes you like me? I’ll change it!”

Liu Changning transmigrated into a female cannon fodder character in a female-dominant novel.

After reading the first half of the novel’s plot, the first thing she did upon transmigration was to divorce the Pan Jinlian-style male protagonist she had just married.

She indulged herself, pretending to be ugly and poor.

But as time passed, the way that man looked at her became more and more unusual…

Liu Changning was dumbfounded: Tell me, what makes you like me? I’ll change!

――

This lifetime, Pei Yuanshao was rejected by the same woman twice!

The first time, she drove him away. Forced by the situation, he endured the waves of anger in his heart, yielding and humbling himself.

That person lay slanted on a rocking chair, her sallow face emotionless: “If you don’t want a divorce, go cook!”

Pei Yuanshao’s face was dark and gloomy: “You!”

The second time, after the crisis in Jinling City was resolved, the new emperor sent someone to pick him up. He turned around, stammering: “I… I have to go. If you keep me…”

That person lay on the kang bed, her back to him, as if she had long anticipated this day, crisp and clear: “Goodbye!”

Pei Yuanshao was so angry his fingers trembled: “You… you!”

The mission of family and country made him restrain himself, averting his eyes and turning to leave this broken household.

Two years later, they met again. Seeing her ethereal face, his body shook like a sieve.

“She was originally a ‘she’!”

At the Qionglin Banquet, the top scholar of the imperial examination, a talented person with exceptional speech and conduct, all the unmarried young gentlemen from aristocratic families looked at her with shy and timid eyes.

The peerless imperial official Pei Yuanshao felt the anger in his heart erupt. He pointed at the woman surrounded by the crowd at the Qionglin Banquet, his thin lips slightly curled: “Little sister, I wants that person to be the wife-master of my Mingde Prince Manor.”
