Closing my eyes to the dizzying sensation, I took a deep breath. Suddenly, I felt an arm around my shoulders pulling me closer.
“Bianca.”
Gillian, having risen, whispered as he cradled Bianca in his arms.
“Bianca.”
The sound of his heart pounding against my cheek seemed extremely loud.
“Thank you for allowing me.”
‘Thank you for allowing me.’
For a moment, his voice seemed to split into two, but Bianca could smile.
Unlike the agonizing hallucinations, the emotion in his voice now was pure joy.
Bianca tightly pressed her head to his chest.
Being securely enveloped in his arms, now nothing else mattered.
An immense sense of fulfillment washed over me.
“Do these things evolve too?”
Killian, the leader of the 5star fortress, joked as he pulled out his soaked axe.
“Evolve?”
“It seems like their regeneration speed has increased.”
The 3star fortress leader grimaced as if he had heard something disgusting.
“They were always fast.”
“No, it’s different this time.”
“Who cares if they evolve? They’re already horrendous.”
“I wouldn’t know.”
Though it was considered cleanup, the battle was still a serious one, with each fortress leader leading their knights.
This year should have been easier thanks to Gillian’s efforts in reducing the number of monsters, but the time it took to clear them was as long as or even longer than previous years.
“So, what do we do?”
At the 3star fortress leader’s question, Killian shrugged.
“What can we do? We just endure. Any other options?”
Raymond, the leader of the 3star fortress, crumpled his face at the seemingly indifferent answer.
“We’re barely holding on as it is. And you say they’ve evolved? How are we supposed to hold on?”
“Then, we die.”
This kid.
Raymond finally exploded at Killian’s indifferent response to his desperate statement.
“Then die by my hand today!”
The moment his words ended, Raymond swung his spear.
Killian deflected it with his axe, used like a shield.
Though the atmosphere was tense, no one worried about the two.
Since becoming leaders, this was an everyday occurrence; some knights even cheered as if enjoying the spectacle.
How much they struggled and fought.
An exhausted Raymond removed his helmet, soaked in blue sweat, and collapsed into the snow.
“Ah, this is annoying!”
“Getting frustrated won’t solve anything.”
“I thought it was getting a little easier.”
“You must have improved.”
“I improved because I had to.”
“Then improve more. That should solve it.”
Killian, who sat next to him, still wore an indifferent expression.
Though it sounded like teasing, that was just how Killian spoke.
Even knowing this, it was irritating.
But, he wasn’t exactly wrong either.
“Just keep your mouth shut.”
Raymen, clearly annoyed, called out to Elizabeth who had been standing quietly.
“Hey, you there. Is this something to report?”
“It’s not ‘you there’, call me Elizabeth, or the Commander of the Sixth Fortress.”
“Whatever. This needs to be reported, right?”
“It seems like it should be. After all, the Duke wouldn’t know the difference.”
As expected, her tone was blunt.
It wasn’t necessarily wrong, but it made him uncomfortable.
Raymen, who had been upset about the monster’s evolution, now looked even more upset.
“Enough. I’m too tired to be angry.”
Letting out an exaggerated sigh, Raymen groaned and lay down.
“Disgusting. Get up.”
“I can’t get up. I’m tired. Hey, you there. How about the one who still has the energy to stand does the reporting? I’m really out of energy.”
“You’ve weakened.”
“Call me weak, then.”
Even when Killian put him to the test, Raymen stood his ground.
“Fine. I’ll go report it anyway, there’s going to be wall modifications in the Sixth Fortress.”
At Elizabeth’s words, Raymen gave Killian a ‘See?’ look.
The sky was as gray as their land.
The surroundings were filled with a rotten and unpleasant smell.
That night.
The fortress was bustling because of a visit from Elizabeth, the Commander of the Sixth Fortress.
“The Commander of the Sixth Fortress, not the Seventh, is coming?”
“Must have something to report.”
“Why would she come here, of all places?”
“Why not?”
“Why? Don’t you know?”
“Is the Commander of the Sixth Fortress not allowed here?”
Someone who seemed completely clueless blinked at the servant and leaned in to whisper.
“Don’t you know Swan? She was mentioned as the next Duchess.”
“And she’s coming here?”
“That’s why everyone’s gathering.”
“Damn…”
“Shh!”
A footman pushed aside the mumbling servants and stepped forward, finger to his lips.
“She’s coming.”
“What is?”
A pain shot through him, even though the hit wasn’t strong.
The servant rubbed his sore side and grimaced.
“Are you doing this on purpose?”
“Keep your mouth shut if you don’t want to regret it later.”
Chilled by the words, the servant hesitated and looked towards the opening door.
The darkness was too thick to see anything clearly.
But then, after a while.
Something flickered in the darkness.
It became more and more vivid, enlarging and forming a clear group in the blink of an eye.
“That, that is!”
“The Commander of the Sixth Fortress!”
“She really came?”
People’s eyes shifted from Elizabeth to the main building.
The third floor, where the Duchess was.
Male lead fell into her trap — and shattered when she walked away
This is also on my reread list!
This one is a slow burn, but when it burns, it burns hard.
Definitely worth a read, y’all!
The story follows a thousand-year-old seductive spirit who, on a bet, sets out to charm the male lead—a once-promising but unfortunate cultivator.
But just when she succeeds in making him fall for her, she heartlessly leaves, driving him to madness.
Determined to find her at all costs, he captures her, keeping her by his side no matter what, even if she hates him.
I love this kind of trope—I enjoy watching the male lead suffer in agony.
The ending drags a bit with unnecessary filler, but that’s fine.
As long as I enjoy the beginning, I’m good.
