Three people, and the maintenance budget for their dignity amounted to just one person.

She doublechecked the figure, half suspecting that the budget for the entire ducal family had been consolidated into one. But even by the most generous assessment, it was pitiful for a single person.

“What is this…”

Though puzzled, Bianca understood when she saw the towering stack of papers.

A knight running the duke’s affairs all alone.

Hadn’t Kreta even described himself as the duke’s adjutant?

It was a wonder he hadn’t died from overwork.

Such a mistake was perhaps inevitable.

“Pitiful.”

Instead of summoning Kreta for a reprimand, Bianca set aside the paperwork regarding the family’s dignity maintenance fund.

Likely there were more errors, so she intended to sort them out all at once later.

Just how many documents had she examined?

Knock, knock.

Lifting her head at the knock, Bianca saw Gillian smiling.

“Would you like to go out?”

“Gillian? What brings you here?”

Rather than entering, Gillian called to her from outside the door.

“The sun is about to set. How about a short walk before it does?”

Noticing his words, she saw through the window that the sunlight pouring in had turned almost red.

She must have been more focused than she thought.

Though she was deeply engrossed and reluctant to leave her seat, Bianca pushed her regret aside and stood.

The paperwork could wait.

“Let’s go.”

Gillian led her to a small courtyard right in front of the castle.

Bathed in the last rays of the sun, the place was unremarkable by any standard, but personally, for Bianca, it seemed comfortable.

Decorated mostly with shrubs instead of vibrant ornamental species due to its northern location, the place shone green in the sunlight.

“Wow, I never knew a place like this existed.”

Bianca was genuinely amazed.

She had no recollection of it, perhaps because she had been ill when she first arrived.

“You’ve never been outside the castle, have you?”

“I was pretty sick when I got here.”

She chuckled awkwardly.

“But I did tour the castle’s interior with Duke Laffin.”

“I heard.”

Contrary to the expectation that it would be extremely cold, the courtyard had almost no wind, and the sunlight actually felt warm.

Bianca gently closed her eyes.

The sunlight filtered through her thin eyelids, painting her world red.

Not long after, she felt someone approaching from behind and quickly opened her eyes in surprise.

Bianca immediately relaxed at the familiar, refreshing scent.

It was Gillian.

Gillian enveloped her shoulders and had her lean against him.

“It gets pretty nice here in the spring.”

“It’s already good enough now.”

“Even flowers bloom, albeit briefly.”

“That’s nice.”

Perhaps it was the sunlight pouring down.

Or perhaps it was the warmth emanating from his halfembrace.

She felt an inexplicable nostalgia.

“What flowers do you like?”

Gillian tightened his arm around her, pulling her even closer.

As her body was drawn back, his warm breath brushed against her nape.

She fought back a shiver at the ticklish sensation and finally spoke.

“The flowers I like are…”

None.

Nothing had ever been permitted, so she hadn’t had the opportunity to like anything.

But if she had to choose…

“White lisanthuses.”

The sundrenched flower was vibrant and adorable, now seeming even to resemble Gillian.

“Lisanthuses.”

His voice warmed her ear.

Who knew a flower’s name could be so stimulating?

Though her face flushed, Bianca stood her ground.

It was embarrassing but she couldn’t deny enjoying this moment in his embrace.

“I’ll fill this place with lisanthuses come spring.”

“I’d like that.”

She folded away her worry that those delicate flowers might freeze in the cold wind.

“Will you be satisfied with just this for today?”

His voice suddenly dropped.

The next moment, a shower of flower petals fell before her eyes.

White, soft petals. They were lisanthuses.
Everywhere in sight gleamed whitely.

The short breath she took was sweet and fragrant.

“Magic!”

Bianca exclaimed softly.

It was a magic that had been sealed long ago, along with the dragon that hid the body of their ancestor after death.

Bianca found it difficult to maintain her composure before the ancient legacy laid out before her.

“How could…”

She wanted to see Gillian’s face, but he hugged her tightly, preventing her from moving.

“I’m not human, you know.”

The bitter words that grazed her ear made even her faint curiosity vanish.

‘Nonhuman Barlock’ was a phrase filled with awe and disdain, but for the person it was about, it could have been violence.

Bianca raised her hand and firmly grasped Gillian’s arm.

“Is it alright that I’m a monster born to devour humans?”

Haha.

As if a clumsy comfort had worked, Gillian burst into laughter.

In that moment, the distance that felt as if it could not get any narrower disappeared, as her shoulders pressed tightly against his chest.

Just as it felt as though she was snuggled into his embrace.

Gillian whispered,
