Anel covered the corner of her mouth with her fan and asked in a seemingly gentle tone. Yet, judging by its meaning, it was clearly meant to mock me. In truth, her words didn’t affect me in the slightest.

‘Why is she so twisted?’

From the very beginning, I knew everything about her family situation, so her provocation felt utterly unworthy of a response.

Of course, Anel seemed to think entirely differently.

“Come to think of it, Lady Diane doesn’t seem to have a partner of her own, does she? You were the same at the last social ball—didn’t you attend without a male partner, accompanied only by a friend?”

‘Which ball is she talking about?’

“You must be referring to the one where I attended with Lady Miguela.”

“Yes, though I don’t actually know that young lady’s name.”

I gave a light nod, and Anel continued with a self-satisfied expression.

“Do your older brothers not introduce you to any of their friends? Or perhaps they can’t introduce you?”

Well, it’s true my brothers never introduce anyone.

“That’s right.”

“Oh dear.”

Anel’s eyes were filled with pity as she looked at me. I seriously wondered how I should clear up her misunderstanding.
