Yan was a character who had a crisis in the middle but ultimately sided with the protagonist and survived safely.
In other words, he was not someone I needed to worry about.
“I probably won’t see him ever again.”
If I left like this, someone unrelated to the main characters like me would be forgotten forever by them. That was a bit regrettable.
Still, if the opportunity arises, it would be nice to see them again. I moved toward the back door, thinking of that unlikely hope.
But something was strange. It was a time when there shouldn’t be anyone around, but the back door area was noisy.
“Yes! I will do my best, My Lord!”
The booming voice startled me, and my whole body stiffened.
“Miss?”
An unexpected sight caught my eye.
[This is a time separator.]It was before dawn when the child secretly left the mansion.
Though the sun had not risen, it was a day when the Duke’s house began unusually early.
Where there should have been only silence at the back door, several guards had gathered.
They were all wearing darkcolored clothes, but the attire lacked uniformity. They were gathered in one place but were busy tying their shoes tightly or loosening their bodies.
To a stranger, it would seem like a ragtag group had gathered inside the mansion.
Then, a man emerged from the mansion. The men who had been standing irregularly stood up and aligned themselves.
“My Lord, you have arrived.”
One of the men stepped forward and bowed his head. The others behind him also bowed in unison.
Kyleius came out, followed by Phyllen. The guards who were already outside greeted him with a casual nod.
Phyllen returned the greeting with a gesture and opened his mouth.
“It still seems strange, even after thinking about it. That monsters are descending. It hasn’t been long since the subjugation ended.”
The guards who had come out earlier were knights from the Lebyche Order, gathered to accompany Kyleius to the border of Keduark.
Keduark was a region bordering Hesera, the Crustel Duke’s territory, known as the Land of Death.
It was an uninhabitable place. Not only were there many steep terrains, but it was also densely populated with monsters due to the region’s unique energy.
Hesera, located close to Keduark, was no different. Monsters would often descend and wreak havoc in the villages, and it was common for them to harm people.
But that was all before Cayleus had settled here. Upon receiving the Hesera region from the Emperor, Cayleus immediately launched a campaign to subjugate the monsters.
It took a full year to completely drive the monsters out of the Hesera region.
Then it took ten months, then half a year, gradually reducing the subjugation period, and at the same time, the Duke’s family began to rebuild Hesera as a place where people could live.
Cayleus had intended to claim Keduarke as his territory, but failed to occupy it due to the constant emergence of monsters.
The monsters, unable to descend to Hesera anymore, were confined within Keduarke.
Since their numbers increased every year, Cayleus had been regularly subjugating them to reduce the damage to the villagers.
Monster subjugation involves exterminating all the monsters living near the boundary and burning down their habitats to finish the job.
It had been less than 100 days since the subjugation for this season had ended. But it was strange that monsters were already coming down again.
“We’ll see when we get there.”
Cayleus responded nonchalantly about the strange phenomenon. You’ll know when you go check.
Among the knights, the largest man raised a hand and spoke.
With his red hair, he was notably more lightly dressed than the other men.
“What if we go and their numbers have increased, my lord?”
“Reduce them.”
“And if they come down again?”
“Send them back.”
“What if the escaped ones bring their friends?”
Cayleus shut his mouth at the last question. There was a lot to say, but he decided not to say more since the situation was what it was.
He just thought, he must be unhappy about being called out so early in the morning.
“Take two days off from training next week. Is that all right?”
“Yes! I’ll do my best! My lord!”
The burly man, Bart, shouted loudly. Cayleus’s mouth twitched at Bart’s booming answer.
In the relaxed atmosphere, Bart laughed heartily and slapped the shoulder of a slender man standing next to him.
“Crissy, you haven’t forgotten the bet?”
“What bet?”
“I told you, didn’t I? A hundred gold to the one who takes the most heads. Have you forgotten?”
“Well, I don’t talk to people who faint at lower ranks.”
“What, you bastard?”
The mature warriors began to chatter one by one, and the previously quiet surroundings quickly became noisy.
Yan, who had been standing at the very front, handed Cayleus a note he had received from the messenger.
“The messenger from the scouting party has returned. They’ve started setting the traps.”
“I see, let’s set out.”
Cayleus took the reins.
Clipclop. It was then that the sound of light footsteps was heard.
It was a noise that did not fit the current scene.
It wasn’t hard to guess who it was, but why that footstep was here was something that couldn’t be known.
Cayleus narrowed his eyes and turned his head. Yan seemed to have discovered the same thing.
“Miss?”
The eyes of the stopped girl met his.
Male lead fell into her trap — and shattered when she walked away
This is also on my reread list!
This one is a slow burn, but when it burns, it burns hard.
Definitely worth a read, y’all!
The story follows a thousand-year-old seductive spirit who, on a bet, sets out to charm the male lead—a once-promising but unfortunate cultivator.
But just when she succeeds in making him fall for her, she heartlessly leaves, driving him to madness.
Determined to find her at all costs, he captures her, keeping her by his side no matter what, even if she hates him.
I love this kind of trope—I enjoy watching the male lead suffer in agony.
The ending drags a bit with unnecessary filler, but that’s fine.
As long as I enjoy the beginning, I’m good.
