At the sound of the door opening, Berea froze at the voice jabbing into her back and turned around.

Ludmila, tightly clutching the lace shawl draped over her shoulders, gave Berea a slight nod of her chin.

“Come in. Have a drink.”

“What? Why would I?”

Berea’s lips curled upward in disbelief, prompting Ludmila to twist her body sideways, making space.

“We have things to talk about, don’t we?”

“There’s nothing like that.”

At her sharp denial, Ludmila let out a soft chuckle and turned away, making no effort to insist.

She hadn’t urged her two or three times to come in, yet she knew Berea would eventually step inside.

Knowing that, she uncorked a cheap bottle of wine without the slightest hesitation.

And just as if to confirm that her assumption was correct, Berea walked in as the door shut behind her.

Ludmila closed the open window and lit the lamp that had been turned off. After filling the room with light, she brought a filled glass to Berea.

Berea accepted the glass with a reluctant expression, then smiled faintly before quickly downing it in one go, casting a fleeting glance at Ludmila, who had just taken a delicate sip of her wine.

It was an unusually rough gesture, as if silently protesting, “You and I are not the same.”
