When I peeled back the leaf, I’d expected something different—but all that appeared was an even more suspicious yellowish lump.

I examined the lump warily from every angle, then sniffed it. The nutty smell wasn’t particularly strange.

“Could it really just be a clump of corn or potatoes?”

It would’ve been better to just give a whole potato instead of wasting effort mashing it up like this. No matter how I thought about it, they must’ve been so stingy even with potatoes that they tried to stretch the quantity using the cheapest possible ingredients.

“Ruthless bunch. Not only are they cruel, but they’re also incredibly thrifty.”

Just as I clicked my tongue in grudging admiration—albeit with ill intent—

the boy, who had already finished his own portion cleanly, poked my side and said,

“Stop muttering and eat quickly—before someone snatches it away.”

“They’d even steal this awful lump?”

“Did you really suffer so much you’ve gone mad? Did you lose your memory?”

“……”

It wasn’t a joke—apparently, they really did steal these from each other.

I hurriedly took a bite of the lump the boy had handed me—and nearly spat it out.

‘Ugh, disgusting.’

Even plain boiled potatoes with just a pinch of salt wouldn’t taste this bad! It felt like chewing raw starch straight from the packet. Just as I barely managed to swallow it down instead of spitting it out, I remembered the boy’s words: eat before it gets stolen.
