“Count!”

“…Don’t follow me.”

Without looking at Duke Bellaste, I walked past him and turned aside.

Seeing no one around, I leaned against the wall and crouched down.

My eyes burned hot, and the tears that had welled up finally spilled over.

‘How utterly foolish of me.’

No matter how many times I vowed never to hope again—hundreds, even—I easily broke that resolve.

‘If only I hadn’t asked why he acted that way, it wouldn’t hurt this much now.’

I struck my chest hard where my heart pounded painfully.

‘He claimed it was because it was his first time…’

Why did that word—”first time”—anger me so much? At the end of the emotion I slowly traced lay layers upon layers of accumulated sorrow.

‘Maternal Uncle, too, was doing his best to love me every moment—and it was his first time as well. Yet he was so different from Duke Bellaste.’

Even the man who called himself clumsy was kind to others—just not to me.

‘Was “clumsy” and “first time” truly all the excuse he had?’

If only he had been that kind of person even to Uriel—if he genuinely didn’t know how to love because it was truly his first time—
