The body of Count Boston was laid to rest on the hill behind the villa, right beside Diane’s grave.

For two days, my eyes had been swollen red from crying so much.

“It would be best to hold the funeral once the territory has stabilized.”

“It’s better to delay the announcement of the Count’s passing for as long as possible. It should be made public only after the succession ceremony. By the way, I’ve already framed the portrait.”

Aaron came out from the playroom, carrying the framed portrait painted by Count Boston.

“…It looks strangely incomplete—only his face and upper body are drawn. I wish he’d held on just a little longer.”

Looking at the unfinished portrait, its background left blank, filled me with bitterness.

I choked up, recalling the moment Count Boston had dropped his brush mid-stroke—the very instant his breath had ceased.

“Shall I find a painter whose coloring style closely matches the Count’s to complete it?”

Aaron asked me cautiously, watching as I gazed at the white emptiness.

Though it would be finished if another artist filled it in, Count Boston’s own touch would vanish entirely.

Even if it remained empty, I wanted to preserve it just as his hand had left it.

It was a portrait brimming with affection—especially his eyes, rendered with exquisite delicacy.

Those sea-colored eyes, tinged with violet, captured exactly how he had looked at me—the joy he felt upon first seeing me, the warmth that had always filled his gaze, all melted into those strokes.

“…Even if someone paints it similarly, it won’t be my maternal uncle. And I dislike the thought of another person’s touch tainting his final gift. I’ll keep it as it is.”
