Postponing Divorce (Completed Main Story) - Chapter 3
Chae Yoon turned her head in surprise upon hearing Jae Oh’s voice.
He was sitting on a recliner placed to one side of the room, looking at something.
Given the laptop on the nearby table and the tablet in his hand, he seemed to be reviewing work-related documents again—but why wasn’t he doing it in his study and was instead here?
Just as doubt crossed her mind, Jae Oh stood up from his seat.
Chae Yoon instinctively felt intimidated by his suddenly raised eye level and quickly lowered her gaze.
His footsteps grew closer—thud, thud—and with each step, an inexplicable flutter filled Chae Yoon’s chest.
Thud. He stopped.
Without meeting Jae Oh’s eyes, Chae Yoon kept her head turned away, and a low voice dropped above her.
“An appointment?”
Thinking his question odd, Chae Yoon lifted her head to look at him.
“Well…”
Her mouth, about to ask what kind of question that was—whether he meant she’d come home late due to an appointment—suddenly froze.
They stood so close their bodies might accidentally touch.
Face to face with him for the first time at such proximity, her heartbeat raced harder than ever before.
Just as the forceful pulsing of blood threatened to flush her cheeks red, he asked again.
“What were you doing before you came in?”
To hide her blushing face, Chae Yoon walked toward the dressing room as she answered.
“I had an appointment, like you said, so I’m a bit late.”
As Chae Yoon swiftly turned and walked away, Jae Oh’s eyes followed her.
He stared silently at her retreating back until he saw her enter the dressing room, then stepped forward—meanwhile, Chae Yoon, having entered the dressing room with Jae Oh left behind, cupped her cheeks with both hands and let out a sigh of relief.
“Phew…”
Thinking she was lucky to have escaped before her face turned red, she started taking off her coat—when Jae Oh walked into the dressing room.
Her eyes widened in surprise, startled to see the man she’d assumed would surely head to his study instead entering here.
Wondering why he’d come this way, their eyes met directly.
Startled, Chae Yoon flinched her shoulders and asked,
“Why did you come in here?”
A trace of wariness lingered in her gaze as she looked at him.
Seeing that, Jae Oh’s eyes narrowed slightly.
I’m not some stranger—what’s with this reaction?
Her response, reminiscent of a puppy encountering someone unfamiliar, oddly irritated him—just like that fleeting male voice he’d heard briefly during their earlier phone call.
Perhaps because of this mounting irritation, Jae Oh inexplicably felt sour. Since this feeling was new to him, his voice came out a little sullen.
“I came in to change clothes. Why?”
Hearing his answer, Chae Yoon glanced at his outfit.
He always wore suits outside, but right now he was dressed in comfortable loungewear.
“Isn’t this already changed clothes?”
“It doesn’t suit me.”
Having finished speaking, Jae Oh headed toward the wardrobe. Watching him, Chae Yoon let out an unconscious breath.
She hadn’t expected him to be so particular—not even about going-out clothes, but even about loungewear.
Caught off guard by this unexpected fastidiousness, Chae Yoon looked at him with slightly bewildered eyes.
But then—
“?”
Suddenly, he stripped off his upper body.
With no warning whatsoever, Chae Yoon’s eyes widened in shock at the sudden sight of his bare back.
‘What? Why’d he suddenly take it off?’
Flustered, Chae Yoon didn’t know where to look.
While she hesitated, Jae Oh calmly changed his T-shirt and fixed his gaze on her.
Chae Yoon stood slightly turned away from him, wearing clothes similar to what she’d worn when visiting his office two months ago.
‘But…’
Something felt different.
She couldn’t pinpoint exactly what had changed, but she definitely felt she looked more put-together than back then—which made Jae Oh unconsciously furrow his brow.
Trending
Had she been out with a man dressed like this?
Assuming that was the case, that vague irritation he’d been feeling all along grew sharper and pricked somewhere in his chest.
His knitted brows tightened further.
[Oh? My older sister came.]That meant Chae Yoon’s appointment had included another woman, not just a man. Or rather, whether a man had been there or not was none of his concern—whomever Chae Yoon chose to meet was entirely up to her.
So he should’ve ignored it as usual…
‘Then why does it bother me so much?’
For some reason, his heart wasn’t reacting as it normally would.
Still unsettled by this unfamiliar disturbance, Jae Oh frowned slightly and asked,
“Why were you late?”
“I already told you—I was late because of an appointment.”
“So what kind of appointment?”
She tilted her round head to one side in puzzlement.
He’d never cared before where she’d been or whom she’d met. Yet today, of all days, he was asking for specifics about her appointment.
‘Why?’
A glint of confusion flickered in her eyes as she looked at him.
Curious why he was acting so strangely, Chae Yoon blinked her large eyes slowly and answered,
“I had dinner with an older sister I know… Is there a problem with that?”
There was nothing wrong with Chae Yoon’s appointment—it was just his own mood that had turned oddly sour.
Having no idea why his usually calm heart had suddenly stirred this way—and certainly no time to ponder it—Jae Oh shot back immediately.
“But did you really go out dressed like that?”
Chae Yoon glanced down at her own outfit.
“I didn’t really put much thought into it…”
At that, Jae Oh let out an exasperated breath.
How could she say she hadn’t put thought into it? Her clothes, makeup, and even her hair—everything was so meticulously done she practically shimmered.
The gap between Chae Yoon’s words and what his eyes saw was so wide that Jae Oh couldn’t agree with her at all.
“If you didn’t put thought into it, why are you wearing something you don’t usually wear, and what’s with your face…”
His eyes swept over her outfit and came to rest on her pale face.
Meeting her clear, bright eyes among her delicate features, Jae Oh momentarily lost his words.
Each eyelash neatly lifted upward, those gentle eyes holding within them such pure, limpid pupils—it made his distracting thoughts vanish.
‘Wait, have her eyes always been this big?’
Forgetting his earlier sourness, Jae Oh quietly stared into Chae Yoon’s eyes. In response, her round eyes began blinking rapidly.
‘Why’s he staring at me like that?’
It felt burdensome to be stared at so intently, right after she’d started speaking.
Afraid her face would turn red again, Chae Yoon placed her hand to her cheek and asked,
“Is there something on my face?”
His reverie broken by her question, Jae Oh belatedly realized he’d been staring fixedly at her.
Wondering what he’d just done, he decided handling the awkwardness came first.
“Huh?”
His solution was to brazenly play it off—and seeing the man who’d just been commenting on her face suddenly shift gears, Chae Yoon’s mind filled with floating question marks.
“What do you mean ‘huh’? You were just saying something about my face.”
“What about it?”
What about it?
Thrown by his illogical reply, Chae Yoon momentarily lost her words.
Because of that, she ended up staring at him as if he were a strange person.
Reading the look in her eyes aimed at him, Jae Oh’s brows furrowed irritably. Unhappy with the situation in every way, he said nothing more and left the dressing room.
Watching his broad back recede, Chae Yoon’s bewilderment only deepened.
First he meddled in things he never had before, then abruptly cut off their conversation, and now he was even getting snappish.
“Why’s he acting like this all of a sudden?”
No matter how she thought about it, this Han Jae Oh didn’t seem like the man she’d known—and so Chae Yoon let out another helpless sigh.

‘Did something bad happen to him?’
She tilted her head, pondering—but even if she wondered, there was no way she could know what had happened to him.
‘Or is he just in a bad mood?’
Whatever the reason, now that he’d left, it was no longer her concern. He’d probably return to his study to work.
Thus, Chae Yoon removed her makeup in the powder room connected to the dressing room, showered in the bathroom, and finally returned to the bedroom.
Naturally heading toward the bed, her steps suddenly halted stiffly.
Her round eyes widened in surprise.
It was because Jae Oh was back in the same spot as before, reading documents again.
“…Why are you doing this here again?”
At Chae Yoon’s words, his eyes lifted from the documents.
Seeing her now refreshed appearance, Jae Oh pointed to the chair in front of him and said,
“Come sit here.”
“Why?”
At her question, Jae Oh’s brows twitched slightly in irritation.
He wasn’t the type to repeat himself.
Moreover, right now he was tangled in unfamiliar annoyance—his heart unsettled by Chae Yoon’s unexpectedly long absence when he’d assumed she’d just quickly change and come out—and several other emotions, making him nearly snap in his usual manner.
“When I say come…”
The words “just listen when someone speaks once” were about to spill out—when his eyes met hers, wide and innocent.
Meeting her clear gaze, he suddenly felt awkward about his usual temper.
This had happened earlier too, and now again.
Whenever he looked into those eyes, his mood turned strange. Frowning faintly, he dropped his gaze to the chair and said,
“Just come sit for now. I have something to say.”
Her feet didn’t move immediately.
‘He has something to say?’
She was startled by his words—and so she stood there dazed for a moment, until his impatient lips, tired of waiting, couldn’t hold back any longer.
“Hurry up a bit…”
“Okay, I’m coming.”
Chae Yoon’s feet finally moved.
She walked quickly over to him and sat down.
Jae Oh set the tablet he’d been holding onto the table and looked straight at her as he asked,
“What were you going to say back then?”
“What are you talking about?”
“The thing you wanted to say when you came to my office.”
If it was about what she’d wanted to say when visiting his office…
“Oh… that.”
It had been asking whether he could come to her graduation ceremony.
She hadn’t wanted to take up his clearly busy time, so she hadn’t said it—and she’d assumed that matter would never be brought up unless she initiated it herself.
Yet the man who’d reacted indifferently back then was now, two months later, asking what she’d wanted to say.
‘Two months…’
Should she be grateful he hadn’t forgotten he’d even said those words at all—or grateful the gap wasn’t a full year?
Though this was the first response she’d received, Chae Yoon didn’t feel happy about his interest at all. Instead, it tasted bitter.
If only he’d asked like this back then, things might have turned out differently.
‘If only…’
She might never have thought, ‘My connection with Han Jae Oh ends here,’ and her decision to divorce might never have solidified so firmly.
Why was he showing interest only now, when she’d almost finished sorting out her feelings?
The bitterness welling up from deep inside gathered at the corners of her soft lips. Forcing her downturned mouth upward, Chae Yoon said,
“It wasn’t anything important. Don’t worry about it.”
Just as she always had.
She’d answered this way, expecting him to simply let it go if she said it was nothing—
“But I do worry. What was it?”

This man, so unlike his usual self, was clinging stubbornly to that past moment.
Unable to understand his reaction, Chae Yoon widened her eyes and asked,
“You’re worried about that now, two months later?”
A faint scoff escaped her crimson lips.
“That’s absurd.”
When Chae Yoon muttered under her breath, brushing off his belated interest, Jae Oh said,
“I’ve been worried since back then.”
Her eyes, which had been avoiding his, stilled.
“That’s why I wanted to ask—but the timing never worked out because of work.”
Timing…
This wasn’t about timing at all.
If he’d truly been curious about what she’d wanted to say, he could have asked that same evening, or at least the next day.
If they couldn’t talk in person, he could’ve called or texted—but instead of doing anything for two whole months, he was now claiming the timing hadn’t been right.
Once again, she felt painfully reminded of exactly what kind of presence she was to him.
Feeling bitter anew, Chae Yoon silently stared at Jae Oh, who was waiting for her answer.
[Marry me.]Remembering that heart-fluttering moment when he’d spoken those words to her, Chae Yoon asked,
“Why did you decide you had to marry me, oppa?”
