At the knock from outside the door, Eric froze in place, and Alicia stiffened instantly.

Flustered, Alicia looked down at Eric, who, equally bewildered, glanced up at her before quickly rising to his feet.

“Oh—yes. Priest.”

Her voice came out hoarse and raspy, startling her into hastily clearing her throat.

“Yes, yes. I’m here.”

“May I come in for a moment? I have something from the Archbishop.”

“Oh—yes. Just a moment, please.”

Alicia hurriedly got up from the bed and straightened her clothes and hair.

Then she turned her gaze toward Eric, who was still lingering awkwardly on the bed.

“Go—quickly.”

“What?”

Having fully composed herself, Alicia firmly grabbed Eric’s arm and pulled him upright.

She then swiftly pushed him toward the window.

Mouthing “Didn’t you come in through there? Hurry up and leave!” she added urgent gestures for emphasis.

Just then, another impatient voice called from beyond the door.
