Fear filled the eyes of the soldiers defending the city walls. Fifty years had passed since the war ended.

Their dread stemmed from the terror of experiencing firsthand a war they had only heard about in stories.

Aden, who had been scanning the ranks to check on his soldiers, turned and walked toward Benjamin.

Seeing Aden descending from the wall, Benjamin—who had been mounted on horseback—slowly dismounted.

“Everyone’s eyes are brimming with fear.”

“It can’t be helped.”

Benjamin rolled his eyes slightly at Aden’s remark and shook his head while observing the soldiers’ grim expressions.

“After the Third Gate was so thoroughly crushed, they’re bound to be steeped in defeatism. I don’t know if you’ve heard, but they all think they’re going to die here. The tribe that once roamed the highlands with valor in battle vanished long ago.”

Aden turned slightly to look silently at the soldiers settled atop the wall, then ran a hand through his hair.

When his gaze reached the sky, dark storm clouds gathering in the distance filled his vision.

“They’ll attack at dusk.”

“You think they’d do something mad like scaling the wall in the rain?”

“The cannons will breach the walls, so that won’t be an issue. This isn’t the old days when a bit of rain would stop cannons from firing.”

Benjamin gave a low grunt at Aden’s words and nodded firmly.

Aden silently watched the sky gradually darken, then turned his head.
