Aden, who had been trying to sleep on the sofa in front of the fireplace, slowly opened his eyes at the sound of bustling activity.

Ludmila was already moving about hurriedly—Aden couldn’t tell when she’d woken up.

He slowly sat up and moistened his dry lips with lukewarm water.

Then, with sleepy eyes still heavy with drowsiness, he looked toward Ludmila.

She was wrapping what looked like a canvas tightly in cloth.

A painting, perhaps? As he narrowed his eyes, wondering if she’d been painting even here, Ludmila flicked her gaze away and tucked a stray strand of hair behind her ear.

“I’m sorry for waking you. It must’ve been a bit noisy, right?”

“No, it’s fine.”

At the low, raspy sound of his voice, Ludmila—who had been sorting paintings she’d planned to take to the festival grounds today—glanced at him briefly before lowering her eyes again.

“I meant to prepare something to eat, but there wasn’t anything decent in the pantry. I’m embarrassed to say it, but there’s a little burnt stew in that bowl over there. It’s bitter, but if you dip bread in it, it’s not too bad.”

“Should I leave?”

Ludmila nodded briefly as Aden’s eyes narrowed slightly. It was the painting he should have delivered last night.

Because of the rain, he hadn’t been able to, so she had to rush it over to the village where the festival would be held.

Angar had promised to send a carriage himself after hearing the news, so they’d likely arrive on time.

“How about we go together?”
