A small stone fell from the wall, and a white tuft of fur popped out from the hole.

The tuft twitched its nose as if sniffing, then retreated slightly before thudding hard against the wall.

Bricks crumbled away, widening the hole enough for the tuft to enter.

“……Snow.”

The rabbit, called by name, twitched its ears, hopped closer, and fidgeted with its front paws before dropping something.

Thud. A small silver box rolled across the floor.

“An automaton.”

The anniversary gift given to Litania.

A box containing memories, condensed into one year of their lives.

Orbis touched the automaton with his fingertip and opened it.

Though it had fallen and struck something, no sound emerged; yet as the spring wound, the image beyond the toy window flowed smoothly.

Orbis watched it silently, then asked Snow.

“Weren’t you the one who resented me?”

The rabbit fixed its red eyes on him, ears twitching.

“Didn’t you decide she couldn’t be happy beside me and guide her to the door of parting? Why, now, do you treat me as if you pity me?”
