The warm colors of autumn settled gently, and the leaves of the garden trees began to fall one by one.

The golden leaves, sparsely hanging, slowly turned a dry brown, signaling the end of autumn.

The gardener Rico hurried about, sweeping up the fallen leaves. He was doing so to light a fire on the pile of dry leaves, as Litania had instructed, to roast chestnuts.

Some servants, drawn by the pleasant aroma, rashly stirred the leaf pile and were met with a burst of roasted chestnuts, causing them to scream and flee.

“Rico! I told you to roast the chestnuts with their shells on!”

“Why are you talking so much? If you’re so bothered, do it yourself!”

The noisy commotion filled the dry autumn garden.

Litania, seated by the window, looked down with a smiling face.

It was a rare moment of peace.

“Princess Litania, I’ve brought the autumn leaves.”

“Thank you, Snow.”

Inside the basket Snow brought were vivid crimson and purple leaves. Their neat, clean arrangement suggested Rico had carefully selected them.

“They’re beautiful. Snow, you really have a good eye.”

“Hehe.”

The dry leaves were either swept away or used for roasting chestnuts, but those with particularly beautiful shapes—too lovely to burn—were set aside and gathered in baskets.
