“Hermier, you look so tired. I’ll stay here—how about you rest tonight?”

Arabella watched Hermier as she fed water from the well to a baby fawn, her expression filled with concern.

Hermier turned her pale face toward Arabella, offering a faint smile and shaking her head.

“I’m fine. So many wild animals are injured… If we don’t treat them now, they won’t recover.”

At Hermier’s words, Arabella fell silent and looked at the many large and small animals waiting patiently for their aid.

She’d heard that the entire forest had been engulfed in flames due to human error, and countless innocent beasts had lost their homes and lives.

The creatures who’d survived the wildfire came to Arabella and Hermier, bearing horrific burns or grievous wounds from collapsing trees and rocks.

Though exhausted, they couldn’t afford to delay treatment.

What had started as a dozen or so wild beasts had now grown into an uncountable multitude, densely filling the dark forest until the ground beneath was no longer visible.

“Arabella, you’re the one pushing yourself too hard. Go lie down for a bit under that old tree.”

Hermier’s weary eyes sorrowfully took in the beads of sweat gathering on Arabella’s forehead.

Arabella narrowed her round eyes into crescent moons and shook her head.

Seeing Hermier, whose pallor deepened by the minute, tirelessly tending the animals, Arabella steeled herself and pressed a bandage to a mole’s bleeding head.

“It’ll be easier to treat them once morning comes…”

Arabella tilted her head back and gazed up at the crescent moon hanging in the pitch-black sky.
