Her clear, glistening eyes, brimming with moisture, looked into his crimson ones, rippling with joy and relief.

Arabella, steadying her trembling voice, slightly lifted the hem of her dress and bowed deeply, lowering both her knees and her head to greet the Emperor.

She appeared every bit the poised and courteous future Empress, without a single flaw.

Though Baroness Rosalind would have frowned upon her for failing to conceal the tears gathered at the corners of her eyes.

Without breaking his gaze from Arabella, the Emperor removed the gauntlet from his right hand and placed it in his left, which already held his helmet.

His right hand—rough and scarred, hardly befitting an Emperor—slowly rose toward Arabella’s face.

But he halted abruptly, lowered it again, turned his wrist, and respectfully presented his calloused palm.

Arabella’s delicate hand, clad in fine silk gloves, settled gently onto his large palm, and the Emperor expertly escorted her into the palace.

As the Emperor and his future Empress entered the hall, every servant and guardsman in the palace split neatly into two lines and bowed deeply at the waist, their heads lowered in unison.

Matching his stride to Arabella’s pace, the Emperor adjusted his long steps, proceeding through the hall and corridors at the slowest speed he could manage, until they reached the staircase of the east wing where his private quarters lay.

Arabella’s large eyes, as if spellbound, kept stealing glances at his profile—until she suddenly came to her senses and quickly redirected her gaze forward.

The Emperor clad in armor, seen for the first time…

possessed a presence so overwhelming it verged on terrifying.

Now she understood why the villagers from her aunt’s estate—who had fought alongside the Emperor in war—spoke of him with voices full of awe and fear as “the merciless god of war.”
