Behind Emperor Maxwell and Count Corald, who had just entered the prison, the heavy iron door slammed shut.

The footsteps of the two guards, who had been ordered by the emperor to stand watch at the prison gate, descended the stairs and faded away.

Count Corald unlocked the rusted padlock with the key given to him by the guards and turned the handle, pushing the door open.

The iron door, untouched for twenty-five years, was so corroded it barely budged.

Bracing his full weight against it, Count Corald finally forced it open and stepped inside first.

Right behind him, the emperor followed, stooping deeply at the shoulders and waist to squeeze through the doorway.

A pitch-black cell, utterly severed from the outside world—so dark not even moonlight could enter.

So small and suffocating that two grown men could barely stand shoulder to shoulder.

The earlier mold stench now seemed nothing compared to the foul odor that instantly wrinkled their brows in disgust.

Under the flickering lamplight held by Count Corald, dead rats and cockroaches lay tangled together—rotting and breeding in the same foul mess.
