Emperor Maxwell, uncharacteristically, fell into brief deliberation.

Had it been his usual self, he would have instantly slit the throats of the four or five wretched rats writhing on the ground.

Instead of the longsword at his waist, the Emperor gripped a black leather whip tightly in both hands. He halted the boot he’d been grinding into the man’s eyes while scanning Arabella, then glanced sideways at her.

In her gaze, two parts gratitude for the Emperor who’d rescued her from being dragged away like a beast, two parts awe at the Emperor who’d felled the men with a single lash of his whip—

and six parts terror and shock at the Emperor who’d methodically crushed each man’s eyes and mouth beneath his boot heel.

In that moment, the Emperor realized something: Arabella had never actually witnessed him executing scum like this before. Even the previous evening at the flower shop, when he’d swung his sword against the traffickers, she’d kept her eyes shut on his command.

He knew well the stark difference between merely seeing fallen bodies and watching with one’s own eyes as the Emperor delivered punishment.

When Emperor Maxwell had seized the palace of the rebellious vassal state of Kiran, the king—who’d witnessed the Emperor dispatching traitors—had suffered a fatal heart attack on the spot.

Glancing at Arabella’s expression, the Emperor subtly shifted his boot off the man’s eye.

But this exposed the man’s utterly mangled face underneath. He tried discreetly nudging the man’s head sideways with the toe of his boot, yet the blood pooling on the ground only made it worse.

The Emperor stood still as if lost in meditation, his cold eyes fixed on the sky. After a moment, he slowly turned his head and locked eyes with Arabella.

Toward those wide, clear eyes—so impossibly large already—he offered the gentlest, most benevolent smile he could muster.

Unfortunately, reflected in her honest eyes—incapable of deceit—the Emperor’s smile appeared utterly bloodthirsty, with a spoonful of madness stirred in.

“Your Majesty…!”

“His Imperial Majesty!”
