At the same moment, in a side palace of the Imperial Palace.

“Ready?”

“Yes, of course.”

“Then let’s begin.”

Responding to Vera’s question—her hair tightly tied with a scarf—Rosa and Dina nodded solemnly. Millie followed behind them with an indifferent expression, stepping out of the side building.

In the dead of night, cloaked in thick darkness, the trio of maids abruptly emerged from the bedroom and parlor, carrying curtains they had randomly taken down. They beat the fabric vigorously with mallets—thwack, thwack, thwack—shaking off the dust. Then they began shouting loudly.

“Now’s perfect—we couldn’t clean properly while the young lady was here because of all the dust. Let’s take out the rugs too and give them a good airing.”

“Might as well wash all the bed sheets and duvet covers too. She won’t be using them tonight anyway.”

To ensure their voices weren’t drowned out by the rhythmic beating, Vera and Rosa dusted the curtains while matching the rhythm with their words.

Dina, who had the loudest and clearest voice among them, gestured for everyone to stop beating the curtains. Then she cried out toward the empty air, articulating each word with staccato emphasis.

“The. Im. pe. ri. al. Ma. je. sty. and. Her. La. dy. ship. have. left. for. a. se. cret. ex. cur. sion. and. won’t. be. re. tur. ning. to. their. quar. ters. to. night. So. we. might. as. well. give. this. place. a. thor. ough. cle. a. ning.”

Taking a deep breath to fill her lungs, Dina shouted once more toward the surrounding side buildings.

“The royal guards who accompanied His Majesty have all returned, and. the. two. of. them. al. one. wi. ll. re. main. in. the. ca. pi. tal. to. night. So. don’t. wor. ry. and. go. a. head. and. cle. an. the. side. pa. la. ce. pro. per. ly.”

Though it was bedtime, not a single person in the side palace lay down to sleep. Despite the chilly late-autumn weather, windows were quietly opened here and there.

Several maids had already stepped outside, approaching Arabella’s side building while feigning nonchalance, busily eavesdropping on the trio.
