“Yes.”

“Yes.”

Millie, secretly summoned to Head Maid Bridgette’s room, stood there, replying only with brief, curt answers to her instructions.

“What is the young lady doing right now?”

“…She said she felt stifled and went out for a short walk.”

“At this late hour? The secondary palace was built by carving into a mountainside, so it’s easy to lose your way even a short distance from the pond. That’s precisely why we marked the paths with vines.”

“She goes for walks whenever she has time… She’s never gotten lost so far. From now on, I’ll stay closer to her.”

Head Maid Bridgette narrowed her furrowed brow and spoke slowly.

“I thought you were clever, but apparently not. What I meant is—if the young lady mistakenly wanders beyond the palace grounds… it would benefit us. Candidates are forbidden from leaving without a permit. If she’s discovered outside the secondary palace for any reason, she’ll either lose competition points or, worse, be expelled entirely.”

Millie bowed her head, realizing she’d missed this crucial point, and the head maid added:

“From now on, pretend to follow her, but if she strays far from the pond, don’t go after her. If she accidentally passes the vine-covered wall and steps outside the palace grounds, things will become much easier for us.”

“Yes.”

Clutching in her hand the envelope containing thirty silver coins given to her by the head maid, Millie replied.
