The Emperor faced Obiseuth, holding Sephilia in one hand and the sword Musatre in the other.

Obiseuth’s face, filled with rage, chilled even the surrounding monsters to silence.

“What do you want? Do you wish to save Hermier’s light? I can’t help it—her light is nearly exhausted already.”

“I know that much as well.”

The Emperor’s crimson eyes gazed briefly at the cold, fading ember before turning back to Obiseuth.

“In exchange for returning your daughter, cease absorbing Hermier’s light. At this point, her light is so faint—it’s no different for you than skipping a single sip of water.”

At the Emperor’s demand, the Demon Queen and her daughter, along with Caligo, all turned to stare at him simultaneously.

Unfazed by their astonished gazes, the Emperor laid out his condition.

“If Hermier’s light is wholly drained by you, the Demon Queen, she will be unable to cross the River of the Dead. Whether she ascends to heaven, descends once more into hell, or is granted reincarnation—all opportunities afforded to the dead will vanish.”

It was highly unusual for someone like Arabella or Hermier to fall into the underworld without having truly died.

Most humans, upon death, crossed the River of the Dead to stand before the three Wise Women for judgment, receiving one of three fates: eternal bliss in the heavenly realm, damnation in the inferno of the underworld, or the chance at reincarnation.

Hermier, her soul’s light fully consumed by the Demon Queen, was fated to vanish without ever crossing the River of the Dead.

If Obiseuth refrained from taking the last remnants of that light, the ember would extinguish on its own, and Hermier’s soul would then be able to cross the River of the Dead.

“And.”

The Emperor brought Musatre’s blade slightly closer to Sephilia’s throat as he spoke.
