“Poppy, you can’t shout that loudly even when we’re outside.”

I started to whisper and explain slowly to Poppy, but decided to keep it simple. Partly because I was feeling lazy, partly because we had to hurry—after all, we were sneaking out without Hecate knowing—but mostly because Poppy was smart and quick to understand.

“You have a special mission to carry out.”

I bent slightly at the waist, looked down at the little one, and whispered that this was a task only you could do. Poppy’s expression, which had been sulking from my scolding, instantly turned solemn. The way he suddenly looked as grave as a knight marching into a battle destined for death was almost comical.

“Once we leave the Imperial Palace later, you must act like an ordinary stuffed doll.”

In truth, the actual task I’d assign him was nothing so grand.

“People outside the palace must not find out who we really are.”

“Quack!”

Seeing Poppy nod firmly with a resolute look, I realized there was no need to repeat myself.

“Then let’s go.”

I gave Poppy a light pat on the head, picked up the now well-behaved little one, and cautiously stepped outside. I’d repeatedly instructed Miranda and Hailey to cover for me convincingly in case anyone came looking during my absence, and now I hurried alongside Jeff, walking briskly to keep up.

‘This rascal is actually matching my stride.’

Having seen him cower helplessly before Hecate several times, I’d expected him to walk ahead—but true to his role as a doting father, he showed his concern through his actions.

‘It’s still better than me trailing behind alone, panting and struggling to keep up.’

This body was still absurdly frail compared to my former one—the body of an emperor in my previous life.
