I was momentarily startled by Freyrie’s choice of words.

‘Are Vladimir’s children naturally precocious for their age?’

No matter how clever a child might be compared to peers, they usually still have at least one childish trait—but Freyrie remained exactly as she’d first appeared.

But perhaps it was different—Freyrie’s view carried a darker, more despairing scent, whereas that boy had ended with a faint smile.
