“Oh, really? What’s it for?”

The finely minced meat, meant to aid digestion, melted delicately in my mouth alongside the chef’s signature banana sauce, its juices blending into a fantastical flavor that lifted my mood even higher.

‘You really liked it, didn’t you?’

Feeling slightly embarrassed—wondering if my reluctance to study had been too obvious—I made a sheepish face, but Hecate merely wore that familiar, slightly awkward expression she always used whenever Jeff and I acted overly affectionate, which she claimed gave her goosebumps.

The maids and others simply interpreted it as the doting look of parents utterly smitten with their precious child, and since this wasn’t the first time they’d seen it, they just accepted it as normal.

I simply couldn’t understand how, no matter what I did, I always ended up triggering such strange emotions in them, making them act so ridiculously. My head throbbed briefly, and as I quietly averted my gaze, Hecate’s voice rang out again.

“Today’s the day we’re having the imperial family portraits painted.”

“Portraits?”

The words triggered a flash of memory, and I hesitated before lifting my chin—only for Jeff to answer in Hecate’s stead with a gentle smile.

“Yes. Until now, we’d only commissioned sculptures to capture our daughter’s growth, and we felt that wasn’t enough.”

Jeff finished speaking and gazed steadily at Hecate; in that instant, his eyes seemed slick with butter, gleaming softly, and I could almost smell the sweet scent of honey wafting from somewhere.

‘There they go again. Seriously.’

The memory of someone from another life being overly sweet flashed through my mind, and I nearly let out a groan—so I quickly stuffed another piece of meat into my mouth and chewed vigorously.

It wasn’t my first time living as a child, nor was it my first experience as someone with parents—but I’d never seen a couple as deeply connected and affectionate as these two. It was fascinating.

If they explained it to me theoretically, I could accept it intellectually—that was an academic viewpoint—but right now, my limbs felt like squid tentacles, boneless and wobbly, and the sensation made my skin crawl.
