‘No, wait—has it really been that long? He’s been coming around less lately.’

Ever since Jeff was publicly named heir to the throne, he’d visited me less often, claiming it might distract me from my studies. I’d actually been glad—more time alone and no need to humor him—but apparently, he’d finally hit his limit.

By proper etiquette, a maid or servant should have announced the visitor and asked my permission before opening the door. But since I’d grown tired of the formality and told them to just let anyone in, the Emperor himself—clearly thrilled—had barged through the door with his own hands, plainly showing just how desperately he’d been waiting for this moment.

His eager expression reminded me of Happy, the pet dog I’d kept in my past life as a hunter, always acting the same way at mealtime—it was almost comical.

But I’d better not treat him that way. After all, he was the one I’d personally chosen as my successor; thinking of him like a mere pet would reflect poorly on my own judgment. I quickly dismissed the thought I’d just had.

‘Well, it’s Jeff, so of course everyone outside stayed quiet.’

Now it made sense—why the maid beyond the door had been so uncharacteristically well-behaved.

Jeff must have asked her to stay silent while he sneaked in for some mischief. It was obvious without even asking.

Besides, this behavior hardly tarnished the dignity of the Emperor—not when everyone in the capital already knew how unusually fond he was of me.

They probably just sighed inwardly: “There goes our sovereign again.”

Given how he’d doted on me relentlessly—from infancy until now, at age ten—with such grotesque overindulgence that my skin would shrivel up like a dried squid, everyone had long since accepted it as normal.

“Isn’t this your time to be working?”

I pushed Poppy off me slightly as he clung to me and spoke bluntly.
